Ryzen 7000G Phoenix APUs Spotted Again, Hinting At Nearing Launch

Desktop APUs Coming Up!

AMD might finally be ready to launch desktop APUs based on the new AM5 platform. A list of OPN codes for upcoming AM5-based APUs was just spotted by Harukaze.

The Twitter user has also noticed the Ryzen 8000 (Hawk Point) mobile APUs.

The new AM5 platform, alongside the Ryzen 7000 series, was launched just over a year ago.

Since then, the red team has not paid much attention to desktop APUs. However, we did see a lot of spinoffs for the handheld and mobile market, like the Ryzen 7840U for the ROG Ally.

The first desktop-based Ryzen Zen 5 APUs are expected to fall under the Ryzen PRO-G series. This series will feature 3 SKUs, including a Ryzen 3 PRO 7300G, a Ryzen 5 PRO 7500G with 4 cores, and a Ryzen 5 7500G with possibly 6 cores.

The specification regarding the core count on these upcoming Ryzen PRO-G CPUs is rather speculation at this point since OPN codes are just unique IDs assigned to an individual SKU. Aside from that, OPN codes do not provide other details except the existence of these chips.

The Ryzen 8000 Hawk Point mobile APUs, on the other hand, will not be based on the new Zen 5 architecture and will be supported on the current FP7R2 socket. This should cut down the overall cost and might offer an upgrade in performance for a similar price.

The Ryzen 8000 Hawk Point series includes Ryzen 5 8540U and Ryzen 3 8440U, featuring 6 cores and 4 cores, respectively. Currently, there is no information on when AMD is planning to launch these new APUs into the market.

However, we might see AMD make an announcement next year at CES. As for Hawk Point, we don’t expect a performance bump since the mobile chip is based on the same Zen 4 architecture and can be considered a refresh with a potentially lower TDP.

Looking at the popularity of the Steam Deck, RDNA 2-based APUs are quite successful. Therefore, the Ryzen 7000G series may achieve similar success, being the first desktop APUs that offer a significant bump in performance over the current Ryzen 5000G series.
