Report Suggests PS5 Pro GPU Is Comparable With Radeon RX 7800 XT

PS5 Pro Could Be A Monster!

Sony has officially announced the PS5 Slim recently, providing more evidence for the existence of the PS5 Pro. Since both consoles were initially leaked by the same source, a more powerful PlayStation appears imminent in 2024.

While the Pro variant is one year away and not much is known about it, a recent report from Red Gaming Tech hints at the console’s specifications. According to the report, Sony will use the RDNA 3 architecture for the PS5 Pro.

Why it matters: A Pro model would allow Sony to boast the most powerful console on the market, dethroning the Xbox Series X from its position.

On the CPU side, the mid-gen refresh appears to stick with a Zen 2 CPU with an identical number of cores. However, the Pro model will bump the CPU clock speeds to 4GHz.

It will also ship with the same amount of RAM running at 18,000MT/s. As expected, the biggest leap will come in the GPU department, with Sony moving to AMD’s latest architecture.

The report points to an AMD RDNA 3 GPU with 60 CUs clocked at 2,500 to 2,800 MHz. This is the same number of CUs found in the Radeon RX 7800 XT, released last month for around $500.

This should deliver a considerable performance boost over the current RDNA 2 GPU with 36 CUs running around 2,233 MHz. Combining 66% more cores and a higher frequency entails impressive performance for the upcoming console.

The jump to a newer architecture is also expected to deliver much better ray tracing. Recent games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have already shown impressive results through ray tracing, and the new architecture would allow PlayStation studios to work on more intensive ray tracing implementations.

The AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT offers 16GB of GDDR6 memory, operating at a frequency of 2,438 MHz. While the desktop graphics card offers memory speeds of 19.5 Gbps, the chart above should provide a rough estimate of the kind of performance Sony will deliver with its next console.

While these leaks excite us about the PS5 Pro, it is important to note that these specifications are not official, and everything is subject to change. PlayStation should announce the console next year, revealing more details about its next mid-gen refresh.
