The Last of Us TV Show Teased To Run For 4 Seasons In Total

3 More Seasons For Last of Us!

The Last of Us TV show has become a global phenomenon, taking an already successful IP to new heights. Following the conclusion of the popular first season, the showrunner has already confirmed a follow-up to adapt The Last of Us Part 2.

Previously, Neil Druckmann stated that the latest title would require more than a single season to be adapted for TV. A new interview from showrunner Craig Mazin provides a subtle update on future plans, hinting at up to four seasons for the TV show.

Why it matters: The Last of Us Part 2 was a much longer game than its predecessor, and multiple seasons would allow the team to flesh out various characters and explore stories that were quickly left behind in the game.

The Last of Us Part 2

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Mazin was asked about his plans for the future of the series. When asked about the total number of seasons, he said:

“It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number.”

The showrunner was also asked about the total seasons required to cover the narrative of Part 2. While he refused to comment, Craig Mazin clarified that it would require at least two seasons.

Assuming the next two seasons are able to fully cover the latest game in The Last of Us franchise, HBO may already have plans to work alongside Naughty Dog for its next entry in the IP, which is rumored to have begun development.

It is also possible that the TV series goes in-depth with the story of Part 2, leading to more than two seasons for Ellie and Abby’s story. Previously, Neil Druckmann claimed that the show would not extend beyond the existing source material, so either scenario appears likely.

It should be noted that Craig Mazin confirmed not all seasons would offer the same number of episodes, leading to the possibility of shorter seasons with fewer episodes.

Later in the interview, the showrunner was asked about his casting for Abby, which appears to have been finalized.

Compared to other gaming adaptations, The Last of Us TV show was praised for its faithfulness to the source material. HBO and Naughty Dog are likely to continue this pattern for future seasons, leading to the potential for another successful run on TV.
