Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Was The 4th Best-Selling Digital Game of July In UK

Thanks To Xbox Backward Compatibility!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is frequently called the best game in the entire Call of Duty series. While it has remained popular to this day, the game lost most of its player base due to poor matchmaking and rampant hacking issues across all platforms.

However, Activision and Microsoft recently fixed the servers for older Call of Duty games on Xbox, allowing players to jump back into the titles. As a result, classic Call of Duty titles have enjoyed a major rebirth.

Among these games, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 experienced the greatest resurgence, boasting over 10K concurrent players. A new report also reveals that it reached the fourth spot on the UK’s list of best-selling games last month.

Why it matters: This success highlights the impact of backward compatibility efforts. Due to the wide availability of these games on several Xbox consoles, thousands of players purchased the older Call of Duty titles last month.

Fans should note that this data only takes digital sales of PlayStation and Xbox into consideration.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was not the only classic game to chart in the UK, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 also appearing in the top 5. The latter is another popular entry in the Call of Duty franchise.

This resurgence has been possible thanks to the backward compatibility implemented in the Xbox consoles. These games were initially released on the Xbox 360 but are currently playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X.

Microsoft is nearing the completion of its merger with Activision Blizzard. The gaming giant has paid nearly $70 million for this purchase, which may have been one of the reasons behind the sudden updates to the older Call of Duty games.

According to reports, Microsoft had a hand in the fixes. Unfortunately, PS3 and PC users have been left behind, with users continuing to face the same problems on these platforms.

Despite the update, hackers can still be found on the Xbox consoles. Therefore, many fans hope for more updates to ensure the games are fully fixed.

Speaking of Call of Duty, the upcoming entry in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, has recently been confirmed. It will be a direct successor to the last entry, introducing popular characters like Makarov to the new trilogy.
