Following months of rumors, Activision has officially revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The third entry in the Modern Warfare reboot is coming to consoles and PC on November 10, with Sledgehammer Games expected to lead development.
However, Sledgehammer Games is not the only studio working on the FPS title. According to the official Steam page, a total of seven studios are bringing the latest Call of Duty to life.
Why it matters: Each recent Call of Duty has offered multiple game modes and gameplay experiences to cater to all kinds of players. This requires the collaboration of several studios.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Steam page confirms that the three biggest studios are all involved in the game.
This includes Sledgehammer Games, Infinity Ward, and Treyarch. Traditionally, Infinity Ward has led the development of the Modern Warfare franchise, which has been the case since the original Modern Warfare in 2007.
However, the latest release will see Sledgehammer Games taking the lead. In terms of support studios, Raven Software, Beenox, and High Moon Studios will continue their work on the Call of Duty franchise.
Over the last few years, these studios have been limited to the Call of Duty franchise. Due to new additions like Warzone and its anti-cheat, Activision has appointed various support studios to ensure each Call of Duty launch is smooth.
However, this was not always the case. Previously, studios like Raven Software and Beenox have created games like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Similarly, High Moon Studios created Deadpool in 2013. Many of these games were well received, but Activision now prefers to ensure that all attention is given to the Call of Duty IP.
Nonetheless, the sheer volume of developers working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is sure to inspire confidence in fans of the series. The game is bringing back iconic characters like Makarov, leading to the potential for an exciting finale to the trilogy.
Since seven studios are working on the game, it could also be the most rich and complete experience in the franchise. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 already offered several modes like Warzone 2.0 and DMZ in addition to campaign and multiplayer.
However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may go even further to provide even more content at release. Activision has also confirmed that a reveal event is set for August 17.
Like previous entries, this event will be held within Warzone, and fans can expect a plethora of new details in the days following the reveal.
