YouTube Internally Testing Feature To Integrate Games Into Platform

Youtube Playables Will Add Games To Service!

According to a new report, YouTube is actively exploring ways to allow its users to play online video games on its platform.

The report states that the feature is called ‘Playables‘ and is undergoing internal testing. Google has invited employees to test out this new service, and they have played an arcade game called Stack Bounce.

Why It Matters: With YouTube being one of the biggest streaming platforms, the integration of video games would have a positive impact on the gaming industry. This move would make gaming even more accessible and increase the popularity of mobile gaming.

YouTube’s Playables feature, if released, will be available for both mobile and PC devices, accessible through both apps and web browsers.

A YouTube spokesperson also emphasized that gaming is a crucial feature for them, and they want to focus on it. They further added that currently, there is ‘nothing to announce.’ This indicates that the feature is still in the experimental phase, and it is unknown if it will progress beyond this stage.

This aligns with CEO Neal Mohan’s strategy to explore various new forms of revenue generation for the platform with advertisement slowed down, as stated in the Wall Street Journal report.

YouTube’s playable feature bears a strong resemblance to Netflix Games, another platform that has introduced video games to its service. Currently, Netflix Games offers 55 titles on its platform.

However, this is not Google’s first foray into the gaming market. The gaming giant previously ventured into the cloud gaming market with Google Stadia, but it did not achieve much success and had to be shut down.

Nevertheless, Stadia was a separate venture, and YouTube’s playable feature could potentially succeed, considering it is an already established platform simply integrating a new service.
