Asus ROG Ally Handheld Expected To Release Sooner Than Expected

New Competitor In The Handheld Market!

The ROG Ally is a new handheld console from Asus. The Asus ROG Ally is a Windows 11 device equipped with a 7-inch display running at 120Hz. Furthermore, the device is a direct competitor of the Valve Steam Deck running on a ZEN2 and RDNA2 custom APU from AMD.

The main selling point of the Asus ROG Ally is its performance claims. Asus claims up to 50% better framerate on the ROG Ally than the Steam Deck while using its 15W mode and twice the performance at 35W. Unlike the Steam Deck, the upcoming ROG Ally from Asus will come equipped with Zen4 and RDNA3 custom APU.

Asus recently went on Twitter to announce the launch of ROG Ally worldwide. So we might see the new handheld from Asus sooner than expected.

The upgrade in CPU and GPU performance would explain why Asus is claiming better performance compared to Valve Steam Deck. But the most deciding factor in the success of a handheld or any other device would be its price.

Dave2D, who recently got a hands-on experience with the Asus ROG Ally, thinks the device will be ‘competitively priced.” But it’s unclear what the reviewer compared the Asus ROG Ally with. Currently, the Valve Steam Deck with everything cranked up would set you back $649 with 512GB of storage.

There are other better and more powerful options on the market, like the AyaNeo 2 or the GDP Win 4, but we are looking at spending more than $1000. A leaked image on Twitter also suggests that the upcoming Asus ROG Ally would be priced somewhere between $600 to $700.

Aside from the upgraded internal specs, the ROG Ally from Asus also comes equipped with much better display technology. The Valve Steam Deck has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 display that tops out at 400 nits of brightness with a 60Hz refresh rate.

On the other hand, the Asus ROG Ally offers a 7-inch 1920 x 1080 display and bumps up the peak brightness to 500 nits with a 120Hz refresh rate. At a display size of 7 inches, the higher pixel count of the Asus ROG Ally might not be much of an advantage, but users would undoubtedly feel the smoothness and responsiveness of the 120Hz display.

It is quite hard to compare Asus ROG Ally to other handhelds on the market since there is no information on the price and the device’s actual specifications. But with the new device, Asus is offering a new, better-looking design that is not only expected to be priced competitively but perform better.

The handheld gaming industry is still a niche market, and not many gamers would invest $1000 on a device like AyaNeo 2 to get the most out of it. At that price point, it is probably better to invest in a PC instead.

Asus is aware of the current handheld market and would probably price it somewhere between the Steam Deck and the much more expensive AyaNeo 2. What are your thoughts on the new handheld device from Asus? Would you be willing to invest in one if the price was right?
