Ghostwire: Tokyo was developed by Tango GameWorks and released for PC and PlayStation 5 on October 21, 2021. While the game was initially met with good reception due to its unique gameplay and future-themed cyberpunk Tokyo city setting, a recent update has the game’s fans divided.
More than a year after its launch, a new update has been added to the game, which adds Denuvo DRM, an anti-tamper technology that provides the game with anti-piracy protection.
This has led players of the game to express their outrage by review bombing the game on Steam. Many players are frustrated and complaining about the performance downgrade of the game after the update.
It is to be noted that the overall reviews of the game are very positive; however, recent reviews of the game are mixed. Denuvo is infamous for negatively affecting the performance of the games it supports.
Developers usually add Denuvo to a game on release to prevent game piracy and boost sales, and many have been observed to remove it after a while. Capcom recently removed Denuvo DRM from Resident Evil: Village 700 days after the game’s launch.
This was a welcome change for many fans, with previous footage showing a significant boost to performance without Denuvo that Resident Evil Village owners can now enjoy on Steam.
However, many fans are wondering why Denuvo DRM was added almost a year after the game’s release. Ghostwire: Tokyo has recently been launched on Xbox, but the game has been available on PC for over a year.
Another Bethesda game, Redfall, scheduled to launch next month, will be launching with Denuvo DRM. Many fans are concerned that this might be an ongoing trend with future Bethesda games, affecting highly anticipated titles like Starfield.
Despite the addition of Denuvo, Ghostwire: Tokyo is still a solid game, as shown by the overall Steam reviews. The backlash from the fans may lead the developers to remove Denuvo DRM from the game ultimately, but that remains to be seen.
Ghostwire Tokyo was previously a timed exclusive for PlayStation and was recently released for Xbox Series X|S. Now that the 1-year period is over, the game is available for Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus users.
Like other Xbox games, players who want to try GhostWire: Tokyo can play it with PC Game Pass without paying full price for the game with the recent Denuvo update.
