AMD Radeon RX 7000 series had a great start though its RDNA 3.0 Architecture did not back up its efficiency claims. Both the Radeon RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX suffered from efficiency issues at both idle and while gaming.
AMD is also aware of this issue and has been working to come up with a fix to address the power draw on the Radeon RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX. AMD released Adrenalin 22.12.2 driver in December last year, which somewhat fixed the power draw issue on the Radeon RX 7900 cards.
According to an extensive test done by ComputerBase, the new drivers from AMD improve power consumption on the Radeon RX 7900 cards in specific workloads and games.
At launch, while playing a video on Youtube, both the Radeon RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX were drawing 71W and 81W. The new drivers have brought the power draw down quite a bit and now consume only 46W on the Radeon RX 7900 XT and 54W for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX during video playback.
The improvement in power draw is undoubtedly noticeable but still does not come close to the power efficiency of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, which only draws 30W while doing the same. Even the Radeon 6900 XT based on RDNA 2.0 architecture only consumes 34W with video playback on Youtube.
In Doom Eternal, when the frame rate is capped, the Radeon RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX show excellent results with a reduction in the power draw of 34% and 57%, respectively.
The launch of Radeon RX 7900 cards has not been smooth, but AMD has been working tirelessly to address these issues as soon as possible. What are your thoughts on the improvement power draw?
