AMD Confirms Thermal Issue On Radeon 7900 XTX Due To Vapor Chamber Flaw

Not Enough Coolant!

In an interview with PCWorld, AMD officially confirmed the thermal issue with their reference design cooler on the Radeon 7900 XTX. According to AMD, the high-temperature issue on the reference Radeon 7900 XTX is due to a flaw related to the coolant in the vapor chamber.

AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager Scott Herkleman confirmed that the issue is limited to a small batch of reference Radeon 7900 XTX graphics cards. The vapor chamber cooler on the Radeon 7900 XTX was not filled with enough coolant, which has let the temps on a small batch of graphics cards spike up to 110C on the junction causing it to thermal throttle and lose performance.

Der8auer also ran his tests before AMD and came up with the same conclusion. On his YouTube channel, he took apart the vapor chamber of the Radeon 7900 XTX and found the fluid to be the potential problem.

Scott Herkleman also said,

We have identified this; you spent a lot of money if you bought this XTX made by AMD, and we want to fix it for you; we have the fix, and we are ready to fix it for you; call tech support if you bought it from AMD.com or bought it from an AMD AIB Partner.

..We want you to have a great product, and we want you to be confident in that product.

The Radeon 7900 XTX is AMD’s best-performing card yet, and it seems AMD is quite confident with its performance and design. As for the thermal issue, well, it’s limited to a small batch only. AMD also admits that the problem is on their part, and they are ready to offer replacements, though the RMA process will take some time.
