Another Action Game From Santa Monica!

Santa Monica Studio has led the development of the God of War IP for PlayStation since 2005. Following four mainline games and multiple spin-offs, the studio brought the franchise back with a new gameplay format in 2018.

The new God of War formula was an immediate hit among critics and fans. With Kratos exploring the Norse realms for the first time and coming to terms with his past life, Santa Monica Studio delivered two new games for the IP on PS4.

However, the Norse adventure has concluded, and the future of the series remains uncertain. The studio is now busy with multiple projects, and a new job listing hints that one of them will be another third-person action game.

Why it matters: Santa Monica Studio has nearly two decades of experience with the genre, leading to the possibility of another strong release.

The developer is hiring a Sr Encounter Designer for an unannounced title. The preferred experience section of the job listing states:

“Prior experience building and tuning combat encounters in a 3rd person action game.”

While the listing does not provide many details about the game, it confirms that Santa Monica Studio’s new project will cater to the studio’s strengths in third-person action games.

Other job listings have provided evidence for work on another game in the God of War franchise. Not too long ago, the studio was hiring developers familiar with God of War and combat systems with companions like Atreus.

Therefore, the action game in question may be related to this project. On the other hand, Cory Barlog has also confirmed that multiple projects are in development from Santa Monica Studio.

Cory Barlog is believed to be leading the development of a new IP, and earlier rumors have suggested this project is set in a sci-fi universe

God of War Ragnarok

Santa Monica Studio is among the most experienced developers in the third-person action games genre, inspiring various studios with God of War’s success in the past.

Another game from the studio has the potential to introduce a ground-breaking entry to the genre after over a decade of experience.

While the possibility of a new action game sounds exciting, this job listing may be pointing to the future of God of War with another fresh gameplay spin, much like the studio’s take on the series in 2018.

A recent report has also claimed that the developer is working on DLC content for God of War Ragnarok. Details about this project are limited, but it has been speculated that Santa Monica Studio may be working on a smaller-scale game like Spider-Man: Miles Morales in the God of War universe.
