The original Resident Evil 4 was regarded as one of the best, if not the best game, in Capcom’s horror franchise. This holds true for the remake as well. Capcom did a great job in creating a game that captured all the qualities of the original and then added to it.
So, it comes as no wonder that the game was a commercial success. According to a financial report by Capcom, Resident Evil 4 Remake managed to sell over 6.48 million units by the end of 2023.
Why it matters: Many were worried Capcom might not be able to do justice to the classic that was Resident Evil 4. Fortunately, the studio was more than up for the task and managed to deliver a great title.
These numbers are incredible for a re-release, and it’s been less than a year since its launch. However, it still lags behind the franchise’s best-seller, Resident Evil 2 Remake, which sold over 12 million units.
Resident Evil 2 Remake has been on the market for five years now. Meanwhile, the latest remake is catching up quickly, making it the fastest-selling game in Capcom’s series.
In due time, Resident Evil 4 Remake is expected to catch up. For comparison, Resident Evil 2 Remake managed to sell about 5.8 million units in a single year. Therefore, the latest release is already ahead.
Considering that Resident Evil 4 Remake has exceeded this number, we might be looking at the new best-seller in the franchise in a few years.
Resident Evil 4 was a technical marvel and an exemplary remake.
Telling the story of one the most-liked protagonists of the series, Leon S. Kennedy, the game did not make any compromises. With the remake only changing things for the better, it’s no wonder it has become a financial success.
According to the financial data, 1 million units of the remake were sold in Q4 2023 alone. Therefore, it has shown no hints of slowing down. Following future sales and price cuts, the game will reach even bigger audiences soon.
Meanwhile, Capcom is interested in future remakes, continuing its strategy of releasing mainline titles and re-releases to keep Resident Evil relevant.
