Xbox Cloud Gaming is Losing Money Due to Compute Demands of AI

Is The Cloud Gaming Future Already Over?

Story Highlight
  • Xbox introduced a time cap for Cloud gaming hours bundled with Game Pass.
  • The company is reportedly losing money if users play beyond the 15-hour mark.
  • Those who want to play beyond that will have to buy additional hours via the store.

Xbox recently revealed a major change to its Cloud gaming strategy. There are now fixed hours that you’ll be able to utilize, capped at 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate users. This sounds absurd, but now we finally know why.

A new report reveals that the compute demand of AI is causing Xbox Cloud Gaming to lose money. So, beyond the 15-hour mark, the company is facing losses; that’s why they have introduced paid hours beyond that point.

Why it matters: Microsoft has announced that when you exceed your hours limit for cloud gaming, you’ll be able to buy extra hours from the Xbox store, which will bring them some profit if users go beyond the time restriction.

A report from Windows Central has revealed the reason why Xbox has limited its cloud gaming hours. Beyond the 15-hour mark, the company is losing money on the platform, which is why they are taking this new measure.

Cloud gaming already isn’t the most popular medium. It is undoubtedly convenient for those who don’t have access to PCs or can’t buy expensive hardware, especially in the current AI-driven inflated market.

However, this new hours restriction might be off-putting for those who wish to explore the service. It might even push away some existing users too; however, in the current market, due to compute demands, this does sound necessary.
