Witcher 4 Development In Full Swing!

Story Highlights
  • The Witcher 4 was announced last year, but its development has just begun to pick up the pace.
  • Nearly half of CD Projekt RED staff has moved over to this game after completing Cyberpunk 2077.
  • However, the game is still many years away from its release.

The Witcher has been the most successful franchise for CD Projekt RED. With The Witcher 3 selling 50 million units, its successor has very big shoes to fill, but the studio has big goals for The Witcher 4.

Last year, the developer announced multiple games, including the biggest project, The Witcher 4. However, with the development of Phantom Liberty and Cyberpunk 2077, this game did not receive much attention until recently.

With work on Cyberpunk 2077 wrapped up, CDPR confirms increasing focus for the next Witcher release.

Why it matters: The developers are aware of the anticipation for the next title in the franchise, and they are putting their maximum efforts into its creation.

CD Projekt RED has just released its Q3 2023 earnings report, announcing one of the most successful quarters in the company’s history.

The report has shared a graph of development teams engaged in the current projects of the studio. It shows that nearly 50% of the development staff was working on The Witcher 4 as of 31 October.

Not too long ago, this team grew to around 260 developers. According to the report, 25% of the staff has moved over to this project after the release of Phantom Liberty. This should speed up work on the next entry by a significant amount.

Though projects like the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel are also being worked on, The Witcher 4 is CD Projekt RED’s biggest priority moving forward.

While this game is still a few years away, we know that CD Projekt RED has been focusing on console development from the beginning. This entry will also mark the studio’s first game based on Unreal Engine.

Nonetheless, with more manpower, newfound confidence, and bigger goals, The Witcher 4 could usher in a new age for open-world RPGs after its predecessor raised the bar eight years ago.
