- Ubisoft released Driver: San Francisco in 2011 and hasn’t revisited the series since.
- In a new interview, the publisher confirmed that multiple projects are being worked on for this IP.
- This could lead to a new game and a live-action adaptation.
Ubisoft’s Driver franchise has always been among its more unique IPs. This series has been dormant for well over a decade, but the publisher seems to be teasing exciting things for the future.
2011’s Driver San Francisco offered the unique Shift mechanic that let players take control of practically any car on the map seamlessly. Such unique elements left fans wanting more Driver games, and Ubisoft now says it has more projects in development for this series.
Why it matters: Arcade racing games are not currently in the best position, therefore, the Driver series could benefit from this untapped market.
In an interview with GameFile, Ubisoft was asked about its live-action adaptation of the series. The gaming giant confirmed that work on the Watch Dogs film was moving along, but Driver’s already-announced series has been cancelled.
However, what’s more interesting is that Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that he still has plans for this franchise. He teased that these plans go beyond different adaptations, opening up the possibilities for more games.
We are actively working on other exciting projects related to the franchise and can’t wait to share more information.

While the publisher already has a dedicated racing series with The Crew, a return to Driver would be incredibly exciting for various reasons.
Fans crave another exciting storyline in this series, and Ubisoft needs more variety in its lineup. A new game would solve both these problems, with a live-action adaptation serving as the icing on the cake.
The publisher is currently busy with two major 2024 releases: Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
However, between the Assassin’s Creed Remakes, new Prince of Persia games, and a Splinter Cell remake, Ubisoft has shown a willingness to revisit established fan-favorite IPs recently.
If Driver receives the same treatment, racing game fans could be in for a treat, especially since this genre has recently stagnated quite a bit.
