Not Living Up To The Hype?

Super Mario Bros. is one of the most popular franchises in the world. Initially launched several decades ago, the franchise has come a long way, spanning generations and finally being brought to the big screen as an animated movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was announced back in 2021, featuring voice actors such as Chris Pratt, Seth Rogen, and Jack Black in the cast. The movie has been in development for a long time and is set to release in cinemas on April 7th.

Just two days before its release, the first reviews have given fans a small hint of what to expect. The movie is currently being poured with less than stellar reviews, currently standing at a score of 50% on Metacritic and 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 54 reviews.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not the first attempt to translate the famous characters into a movie. The original Super Mario Bros. movie first premiered in 1993 and was a live-action take on the franchise.

However, after almost 30 years, Nintendo decided to take another shot at a Super Mario Bros. movie. Recently, video game movies such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu have shifted away from the trend of poor gaming adaptations.

As such, many had expected Super Mario Bros. to continue on this path and deliver an exceptional release due to Nintendo’s extensive involvement in the project. However, the reviews indicate that recent movies like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 have done a better job bringing the character to the big screen.

Comparing the two, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has a much better score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score may differ from the critics’ score, which has been observed in many cases before.

Nonetheless, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently tracking to earn $225M+ in the movie’s worldwide opening weekend.
