A Breaking Bad VR Project In Collaboration With The Show's Creator Was Also Scrapped.

Story Highlight
  • Sony canned a sci-fi horror game in the vein of Dead Space that Firesprite was developing.
  • In addition to the horror title and the Twisted Metal Battle Royale, a VR game based on Breaking Bad was also axed by the company.
  • The studio is currently working on a narrative horror title for the PS5.

During the PS5 generation, Sony has cancelled countless exclusive titles, greatly reducing its first-party output. From the Days Gone trilogy to the live-service adaptations of The Last of Us and God of War, the Japanese giant has axed 10 games.

Firesprite is another developer that has been the victim of this treatment, with its Twisted Metal battle royale title getting cancelled, leading to layoffs in 2024. Now, a new report suggests that the studio was also working on other games that didn’t see the light of day, including a sci-fi horror title.

Why it matters: Sony’s indecisive strategy has wasted the time of both players and countless talented developers during the PS5 era.

According to a report from MP1st, Sony cancelled a new sci-fi horror IP similar to the Dead Space franchise at Firesprite studios, while also scrapping a Breaking Bad VR game

The new horror IP was in development between 2018 and 2020, but never went past the prototype stage. Concept art from a former Firesprite artist showed clear resemblance to the dark sci-fi themes of Dead Space, featuring a futuristic space setting and grotesque monsters.

In addition, a Breaking Bad VR project was also in the works at Firesprite, but ended up getting canned by Sony. The title was meant to be a narrative experience for the PSVR 2 that would take players through the iconic landscapes featured in the series with less focus on gameplay.

Series creator Vince Gilligan was collaborating with Firesprite on the VR game.

According to a Variety report that didn’t name the studio, the VR title had started development in 2017, with Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan collaborating. However, the project would be cancelled by Sony a year later, and Gilligan revealed in 2022 that millions of Dollars had already been spent on the game’s development.

Despite these cancellations, Firesprite is alive and is currently hard at work on a narrative horror title for the PS5.
