Saints Row 2006 Still Sold 2 Million Copies!

Story Highlight
  • The Saints Row reboot appears to have sold about 1.7 million units.
  • This information comes from a developer’s LinkedIn profile.
  • For reference, the original game sold 2 million units, while its sequel sold over 3 million copies.

While fans were hoping for a massive return to form for Saints Row after the series returned in 2022, its latest reboot turned out to be a complete departure in nearly every way.

Following a controversial marketing campaign and a poor release, Volition Games completely failed to revitalize the franchise. According to reports, this release also became the IP’s worst-selling entry.

Why it matters: The franchise has always had an avid fanbase, so it was surprising to see a revival fail so badly.

According to Tyrin Stevenson’s LinkedIn profile, who worked as a social media manager at Volition, the game has sold around 1.7 million copies.

If these sales are accurate, the Saints Row reboot can be considered the worst-selling entry in the franchise, as the very first release sold over 2 million copies. Following that, Saints Row 2 sold around 3.4 million copies.

The third title in the franchise, Saints Row 3, remains the IP’s best-seller. It sold over 5.5 million copies, while the sales of the fourth entry remain unknown. Still, considering that the latter sold 1 million copies within its first week on the market, it likely sold more than the recent reboot.

In addition to the actual quality of this reboot, Volition Games’ decision to skip a Steam release may have become one reason for the poor sales. However, it remains undeniable that this was just one small problem compared to everything wrong with this reboot.

Saints Row Will Likely Be Put on Pause After The Latest Failure

Following the disappointing release of Saints Row 2022, Embracer Group has shut down Volition Games, but the series may return eventually. Embracer Group confirms that the franchise will live on.

The Saints Row reboot did nearly everything wrong. Ultimately, it can be considered an example of what not to do for an established franchise since going against the fanbase is rarely a great idea.
