It's Not Perfect But It's Got Potential!

Story Highlight
  • Competitive players risk hand injuries due to excessive practice, which is why a vertical mouse design benefits such cases.
  • The Razer Pro Click V2 Vertical combines productivity-based features with gaming mouse features in a vertical design, making it a jack of all trades.
  • It’s not a perfect mouse, but it’s a push toward the right track, and with future improvements, vertical mice might reintroduce what gaming peripherals are about.

A good mouse is one of the first things gamers consider upgrading when playing competitively. Whether we talk about CS:GO, Valorant, Fortnite, Apex Legends, or any other competitive shooter game, a good mouse makes or breaks your skills. Mice like the Logitech G Pro X Superlight or the Razer Viper V3 Pro usually top the recommendation board. But what if I told you Razer’s new vertical mouse might change how gaming mice work? Let’s break down why I think so.

Competitive E-Sports Players Risk Hand Injury

How do you think a player reaches a world-class competitive league in an online game? Is it simple luck and skill? Not really. Every competitive player puts in outrageous amounts of time on training. Of course, skill and genetics play a part, but they also need practice. However, what happens when you keep your hand in the same posture for 8-10 hours daily? Perhaps even more? You risk hand injury, that’s what.

There have been cases of E-Sports players retiring early due to underlying hand injuries. Thomas “ZooMaa” Paparatto, a top player in Call of Duty, retired in 2021. According to an interview with the Washington Post, he reported having “no range of motion in his thumb” since 2016 and that he’d “feel the wear and tear of long gaming sessions”. There have been other cases, too, which is why an ergonomic mouse might help offset some of the toll of hardcore grinding, and that’s precisely where Razer’s Pro Click V2 Vertical comes into play.

Productivity And Gaming Merged In One

For a long time, ergonomic vertical mice have been mostly enjoyed for productivity purposes. That’s still the case, but the Razer Pro Click V2 Vertical changes things up. Sure, it has its productivity advantages, but it also has most of the features you’d look for in a high-end gaming mouse.

The mouse features eight programmable buttons, which is decent for most productivity use cases. Besides that, Razer has introduced an “AI Prompt Master” that provides quick access to prompting ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot. It also helps boost productivity by summarizing text, drafting emails, and much more. You can also add shortcuts to the programmable buttons through the Razer Synapse 4 software to streamline your workflow for productivity tasks.

That’s not all this mouse offers, though. Razer went above the requirements and added the esteemed Focus Pro 30K Optical Sensor, which you find in the Deathadder V3 Pro and the Viper V2 Pro. The sensor provides up to 550 inches-per-second max speed and a max acceleration of 40G. You also get 100% PTFE feet for smooth gliding, mechanical switches rated for 60 million switches, and Razer HyperSpeed Wireless. The only problem might be the weight, going up to 150g.

Gamer Design With An Ergonomic Feel

What do you think happens when you merge an ergonomic design with a gamer design? An odd combination, I agree, but that’s exactly what the Razer Pro Click Vertical V2 did with its design. On one hand, we have a somber vertical mouse with a standard design and grip. On the other hand, the mouse is filled with Razer’s traditional gaming accessory design elements.

For example, the mouse has a dark-colored sleek design, which you see in Razer’s other offerings, too. The lower half of the mouse is illuminated with 18-zone lighting for a full underglow, which looks beautiful, at least in the images. You can customize the lighting through Razer’s Chroma RGB software. I understand why Razer went with such a unique design; it truly sets the product apart from the competition.

It’s Not Perfect

All the praises aside, the Razer Pro Click Vertical V2 isn’t the “perfect” mouse. The biggest con is the weight. If you have ever played competitively, you’ll know how much a mouse’s weight can affect your gameplay. That’s why a honeycomb design was introduced in the first place: to reduce as much weight as possible. Today, we have mice that weigh 42g or less (I can see you, Hitscan Hyperlight). In such a dynamic, introducing a 150g mouse sends a weird tingle through my skin.

That’s not all, either. Changing your mouse grip and adjusting to it will take time, too. Sure, it’s for a better cause (preventing hand injury), but you might have to go back to the basics and climb the stairs from the start. That’s a lot of commitment you’d need to put into getting back into the arena. But if you can do it, you also reap the benefits.

We’re On The Right Track

Like I said, the Razer Pro Click Vertical V2 isn’t the perfect mouse, but it’s a step toward the right track. Hand injuries due to excessive repetitive tasks are uncommon but not unheard of, and if the dangers of competitive gaming can be reduced, the industry can flourish even more.

I can’t wait to see what kind of peripherals Razer and its competitors will introduce following this product’s release. I can only say that Razer’s new vertical mouse might change how gaming mice work, and I’m all up for it!
