After the technology limitations faced by PlayStation 5 in the latest AAA games, everyone has their eyes on the successor, PlayStation 5 Pro, which was revealed this month.

However, after the reveal of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony has raised interest in its next console. The latest reports suggest Sony is preparing the PlayStation 6 with an AMD SoC.

Why it matters: This means that Sony has already begun working on PlayStation 6, and the backward compatibility is their keen focus.

PS5 Pro Is Also Using AMD SOC

AMD SoCs are the most advanced ones that Sony uses in its consoles, whether PS5 or PS5 Pro because Intel SoCs have limited technology capabilities.

However, it seems Intel has lost another generation of Sony consoles, as a report from Reuters suggests a deal with AMD to develop a SOC for PS6.

Elaborating more, the source explained that the use of AMD SOC was also to ensure backward compatibility, which could be limited if we risked with intel.

Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility.

So, AMD is in the bidding process to design the PS6 chip, and Sony has yet to make an official announcement or respond to the Reuters report.

Intel lost the contract in 2022 because of a price dispute over how much a processor could profit from Intel.

However, it remains to be seen to what extent backward compatibility would apply to PS6 and whether there will be PS4 or PS5 games. Still, the good thing is that at least there is hope for the older catalog to be playable on the next-generation console.

Until the PlayStation 6 is released, all eyes are on the PS5 Pro, which is coming soon and has a massive price tag of $700$.
