PS5 Tops US Console Sales For The Month of September

Xbox Came In Second Place!

The PS5 has been on a winning streak in 2023. With a major release like Spider-Man 2 arriving tomorrow, a new model coming next month, and incredible sales figures so far, the console has continued to dominate the industry.

Circana’s latest report reveals that these sales figures were maintained in September, with the PlayStation console comfortably leaving the competition behind in the US.

According to the data, the PS5 was the best-selling console in September.

Why it matters: Sony hopes to sell 25 million consoles this fiscal year. These results are promising, highlighting a smooth road ahead.

Last month was very eventful for the gaming industry. With the release of Starfield, Xbox made strides to improve its position in the market. While it could not dethrone PlayStation or end its streak, the gaming giant was able to retain the second spot.

The report highlights that the US spent 10% more on gaming hardware than last year, leading to another impressive month for the PS5. Additionally, reliance on console bundles, discounts, and new AAA games helped Sony sell more units.

However, the biggest sales boom for the console is yet to come. With the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and a new console right around the corner, the gaming giant is expected to reach higher figures soon.

In other parts of the world, like Europe, the console sold nearly twice as many units as last year in September. Therefore, its success was not limited to the US market.

Sony PS5 PlayStation 5

While PlayStation did not have any notable first-party releases last month, the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 made its console debut on the platform, with an Xbox release confirmed for later in 2023.

Last quarter, the gaming giant reported 3.3 million PS5 units were sold. However, this figure was below expectations, and Sony confirmed it would introduce more measures to counter the disappointing results.

It appears the numerous discounts and promotions are bringing positive results. Heading into the holiday season, the console is expected to ride this momentum and use new releases like Spider-Man 2 for even better results.
