PlayStation is one of the names that immediately pop up when gaming is mentioned. With the PlayStation 5 enjoying huge success, Sony wants to expand its gaming future by adding platforms like PC, mobile, and cloud.

According to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, PlayStation is Sony’s core platform, but they will concentrate on expanding their titles to multiple platforms. This will be beneficial for both SIE and the consumers who might be able to enjoy PlayStation’s offering on other platforms.

Why it matters: PlayStation has traditionally offered a closed-off ecosystem to its consumers. However, with the changing times, the gaming giant is adapting to the new style of game distribution.

PlayStation makes some of the best games in the industry. Unfortunately, the people who don’t have access to Sony’s console miss out on them. Therefore, Sony’s expansion to other platforms is a welcome change. Yoshida stated:

PlayStation will remain our core product. We will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and cloud.

A similar approach was evident from PlayStation’s recent leak. Overall, it seems like other platforms will receive more attention from Sony moving forward, but this won’t come at the expense of its console business.

Sony has already expanded to the PC platform, which kicked off in the form of Horizon Zero Dawn arriving on the platform. This is still Sony’s best-seller on the platform, even though other games have been quite successful as well.

Later, notable titles like God of War, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, The Last of Us, and Spider-Man made their way onto the platform.

PlayStation 5 Games

Reports suggest that this year, too, will be huge for PlayStation PC ports, with titles like The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and more. Cloud gaming is also something SIE is looking into, and Sony is reportedly planning to launch PS5 cloud streaming by March 2024.

Furthermore, PlayStation recently partnered with NCSoft for mobile gaming focus. All in all, Sony seems to have a strong focus on expanding their business beyond the console market.

This approach seems to be inspired by Microsoft’s current plans for Xbox, outlining the general direction of the industry.
