- Phantom Blade Zero was expected to have similarities with the Souls-like genre.
- However, the developer has revealed that Souls-likes were used only as an inspiration for the map.
- S-GAME was more interested in creating an action game.
Phantom Blade Zero, an upcoming game that many fans are waiting for, will offer 30 to 40 hours of gameplay. The title offered a promising look in the first trailer, but many were concerned that the real-time gameplay wouldn’t look as good as the trailer.
However, when the gameplay footage was released, everyone was shocked. Following that, leaked footage was revealed, which gave an even more extensive look at the combat. The team has also revealed other details during a Q&A.
One interesting element is that Phantom Blade Zero is not a Souls-like.
Why it matters: Since the parry-based combat and enemy designs were reminiscent of FromSoftware’s Sekiro, many immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion.
In a Q&A post on Twitter, updates were given on the game. The developer completely denied the notion that Phantom Blade Zero is one of the many Souls-like games available today.
those who have tried the demo should have a solid idea that it’s not a Souls-Like game.

The team emphasized that the map is inspired by Souls-likes, but everything else is more akin to traditional action games.
Combat is also more combo-focused, which differs from the endurance-based dodging style of FromSoftware releases. Meanwhile, the team confirmed that enemies would not respawn upon death.
This is a trademark of the genre and already sets the title apart from other Souls-likes. Moving further away from the genre, S-GAME will offer multiple difficulty options.
Following recent hands-on time, players have compared Phantom Blade Zero with Ninja Gaiden. Interestingly, the latter was also quite difficult but preceded the Souls-like genre.
The team has tried its best to clarify that fans should not expect another FromSoftware-like experience. It has also teased a commercial demo for all gamers later down the line. Therefore, fans should keep an eye out for a playable demo on the PC and PS5 storefronts.
