"The Future Of Consoles Is Bright"

Story Highlight
  • Sony is currently one of the leading console manufacturers.
  • According to Mark Cerny, the industry still has a bright future ahead.
  • He believes that consoles just need to keep doing what they always do well.

PlayStation is highly rated for its hardware and games. Its consoles are among the best in the industry, with the PS5 standing as one of today’s best-selling platforms. On the other hand, the PC market is also growing at an incredible pace.

With exclusivity no longer as important today, many believe console gaming is slowly losing its biggest edge. However, PS5 architect Mark Cerny says that this industry is safe for the foreseeable future.

Why it matters: PC gaming is seemingly the ultimate platform for those looking to enjoy the hobby. This industry has also grown much bigger recently, with many shifting to PCs from consoles.

According to Sony, the PS5 generation is now its most profitable. However, much of this success came from the PC platform, with standout hits like Helldivers 2 performing incredibly well on Steam.

During a recent interview, Mark Cenry spoke about console hardware in particular. Speaking to Gamesindustry, he noted that the notion of budget PCs killing consoles does not terrify Sony.

He pointed out that budget PCs may be cheap, but buying used consoles can be just as pocket-friendly. Mark Cerny believes that consoles won’t go anywhere as long as the manufacturers continue to offer a compelling package.

This includes a user-friendly interface, capable hardware, and a strong library of games.

The future of consoles is pretty bright.

Consoles also offer various benefits over PCs. For instance, the average gamer can easily navigate a console and rarely needs to troubleshoot on this platform.

Meanwhile, upcoming exclusives like GTA 6 will ensure that the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X remain important. Therefore, Mark Cerny is betting on the overall console gaming package to ensure the future remains promising.

Despite Cerny’s statement, many will continue to argue that consoles will eventually go extinct.

Perhaps this will happen once cloud gaming is deeply ingrained in the industry. However, with internet connections still making progress and the technology unable to offer a satisfactory experience for everyone, it seems consoles are safe for now.
