Mafia: The Old Country Doesn’t Feature An Open World Because of Mafia 3 Criticism

Story Highlight
  • Mafia: The Old Country goes back to the roots of a Mafia game as it features a linear world.
  • Mafia 3, the latest title in the series featured an open world and it was brutally criticised by the fandom.
  • Due to that criticism, the developer decided not to incorporate an open world into the upcoming title.

Mafia is one of the greatest gaming franchises that one can play to this day. However, the third iteration in the series fell short of expectations mainly because of its open world, as there was a lack of engaging activities, and it just felt too repetitive.

That is why fans were glad to know that the upcoming title, Mafia: The Old Country, won’t feature an open world. However, it has just been revealed that the game isn’t featuring an open world because of the criticism Mafia 3 received

Why it matters: The open world theme in video games has become so saturated that everyone wants to implement it in video games. However, it isn’t necessary, and it never should be a necessary addition in a game unless the developer can make it engaging enough.

IGN had the courtesy of getting an exclusive hands-on preview of Mafia: The Old Country, and due to that, they got to know the reason why Hangar 13 decided to remove open-world from the game

Mafia 3, though very good, went full open world, and the developers seem to feel similarly about it in hindsight as players did; It just didn’t fit Mafia well.

-Nick Baynes

The president of Hangar 13 has admitted that the open world didn’t work well in a Mafia game, as the first two titles in the series were just perfect. IGN further suggested that, thanks to the positive reception from the Mafia remake that was released in 2020, the developer was able to lean more into the linear world for the upcoming title.

The Upcoming Mafia Has A Lot of Hype Behind It

It is good to see studios learning from their mistakes and improving them in the sequels, which is something that should be very, very, very common in the gaming industry, but unfortunately, it isn’t.

The 4th iteration in the series releases on 8th August. What are your thoughts on a Mafia game being an open-world game? Are you excited for the upcoming game’s launch? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.

Ex-Bethesda Dev Says He’s Highly Skeptical About Elder Scrolls 6

Story Highlight
  • Former Bethesda dev says he’s unsure about what to expect from Elder Scrolls 6.
  • He says they’re doing something different from what he would’ve done.
  • That’s the reason he’s skeptical of it, because he isn’t sure what Bethesda will do.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is one of the most anticipated titles of all time. Bethesda’s most decorated franchise got its last mainline installment in 2011 with the release of Skyrim, so fans have been waiting for almost 15 years now.

However, a former Bethesda developer has voiced his concern about the upcoming entry, and he is skeptical about The Elder Scrolls 6. He says he doesn’t really understand where Bethesda will go with the lore.

Why it matters: The Elder Scrolls franchise has a deep and immersive lore that is a primary part of the overall experience, so Bethesda has to keep that in mind for the next entry as well.

Talking to the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Bethesda veteran Kurt Kuhlmann expressed his concerns about The Elder Scrolls 6. He says the team in charge will likely try to do something different, like Elder Scrolls Online, and he isn’t sure about it.

For context, Kuhlmann was the genius mastermind behind the original Oblivion and Skyrim, so this is coming from someone pivotal for the franchise. He said he doesn’t know what they’re doing, but it’s different from what he would’ve done.

They’re making something different than what I would have done, and so I don’t know how I’m going to feel when I see it.

– Kurt Kuhlmann

The Elder Scrolls 6
The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to be officially revealed this year

The consensus around The Elder Scrolls 6 is in a weird spot. Previously, an ex-developer also said that the game is unlikely to meet expectations. Also, since Bethesda hasn’t delivered the best titles for the last few years, people are second-guessing

Nonetheless, this doesn’t change the fact that the reveal would be a hyped affair. There were reports that the title will have a Hammerfell setting, and it would be revealed this year, but there hasn’t been an official word yet.

New Sony Patent Suggests PS6 To Support Hardware-Level Backward Compatibility Features

Story Highlight
  • Sony has published a new patent that discusses tuning modern hardware to run legacy applications smoothly on the new device.
  • The patent talks about hardware-level backward compatibility for legacy applications, like games from other consoles.
  • Sony may add this system to PS6, which also perfectly connects with the past rumors about the next-gen console.

The issue of game preservation and backward compatibility has become much greater as gaming has progressed over the years. Both Xbox and PlayStation have been in a race to solve the dilemma, but a new patent suggests Sony’s PS6 may end up taking the trophy.

We’ve found a new Sony patent that proposes the ability for modern hardware to be tuned in real-time so that it can run legacy apps more smoothly on the newer devices. In other words, Sony talks about securing hardware-level backward compatibility features.

Sony possibly wants to solve the issue of older software or games crashing or running with problems on the newer, modern PlayStation 6 hardware. This can be achieved by tuning the system until perfect synchronization and performance are achieved.

To address problems that arise due to differences in hardware behavior when running a legacy application on a new device, the new hardware may be tuned to run the legacy application. […] The application may be run repeatedly on the new system while tuning its operating parameters to adjust the application-specific performance characteristics.

Why it matters: Sony publishing the patent for hardware-level backward compatibility amid rumors of PS6 support serves as further evidence that we will be able to play old PlayStation games to a greater extent.

The flowchart diagram shows the derivation of application-specific operating parameters as per the proposed system.

The patent, “Running a Legacy Application on a Non-Legacy Device with Application-Specific Operating Parameters for Backwards Compatibility,” outlines a system that uses customized hardware settings to run legacy software efficiently.

The system auto-adjusts parameters like CPU/GPU speeds, cache, and pixel output to prevent performance issues when running old apps on new hardware, enabling true backward compatibility, according to Sony.

Differences in performance of the hardware components of a new device and a legacy device can cause errors in synchronization on the new device, […] Such differences in performance can arise, e.g., from differences in hardware architecture between the new and legacy devices.

The image shows an example CPU that may be configured to operate in a backward compatibility mode.

This patent also solidifies a popular rumor that Sony’s PlayStation 6 will use an AMD SoC with backward compatibility. In other words, the console might be able to run PlayStation games from many older generations with hardware-level backward compatibility.

Sony has also published several other innovative patents over the last few years, including one to introduce virtual buttons on controllers that work with finger gestures and another one for allowing in-game NPCs to react to player emotions in real-time.

Do you think Sony will make backwards compatibility one of the most defining features of the next-gen console? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Santa Monica’s New IP Is PlayStation’s Next ‘Big Thing’, Says Reliable Insider

Story Highlight
  • Santa Monica is working on a brand-new IP for the first time in over 2 decades.
  • Jason Schreier says that the game’s development is progressing well, and it could be PlayStation’s next big thing.
  • A potential reveal could happen at the upcoming rumoured PlayStation Showcase.

Update: After updating progress on Santa Monica’s next project, Jason Schreier further clarified that the project isn’t a new IP, implying that Cory Barlog may be working on a new Kinetica title, a God of War game or even a third-party IP.

The original story follows..

With the God of War franchise ending its Norse setting, its next venture is unknown for now. Meanwhile, rumours suggest a spin-off game is in development as Santa Monica Studio works on the next chapter.

That is, the studio is now expanding its wings to other genres, too. For the first time in over two decades, reports suggest that Santa Monica Studio is working on a brand new IP.

Details on the project are unknown except for its existence, but now a renowned journalist has come forward to state that this new Sci-Fi IP will be PlayStation’s next ‘big thing’, hinting at a great future.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s first-party slate has been dry recently. Santa Monica Studio is arguably the best and most experienced studio under PlayStation, and their new project would undoubtedly do wonders for PlayStation’s first-party catalogue.

Journalist Hinting That Santa Monica’s New IP Will Be PlayStation’s Next Big Thing || ResetEra

In a thread on ResetEra discussing PlayStation Studios, Jason Schreier, one of the most well-known and credible journalists in the industry, was asked about Santa Monica’s new IP. Jason replied that the game was progressing well since the last time he spoke to sources, which was a couple of months ago.

The project will be led by Cory Barlog, the director of 2018’s God of War. His involvement with this new project is potentially also why he didn’t return for God of War Ragnarok.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Is Built To Break, It’s Claimed

Story Highlight
  • Tech experts have heavily criticized the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller.
  • A major channel focused on electronics and hardware claims the controller is not very repair-friendly on purpose.
  • Nintendo’s decision to use drift-prone potentiometers has also been heavily criticized.

The Nintendo Switch 2 avoided price hikes ahead of its official release last month, but the same can not be said for its accessories, including the Pro controller.

This controller, which was already more expensive than its predecessor, was priced at nearly $100 when it launched last month. However, according to experts, Nintendo’s latest controller is basically a cash grab.

Why it matters: A similar claim was previously made about Sony’s DualSense controller, indicating potential malice or negligence behind the design of these incredibly popular pieces of hardware.

Popular hardware channel iFixit recently tested the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller and released a detailed teardown.

The teardown focuses on the repairability, or lack thereof, when looking at the controller. According to iFixit, something as simple as reaching the battery requires removing multiple screws and layers of plastic.

The front plate also uses an adhesive layer that needs to be replaced when reassembling the controller to prevent rattling. Moreover, accessing the battery requires removing the mainboard, which in turn, requires the removal of the front bumpers and the plastic shell holding them in place.

Adding to the list of problems, iFixit points to Nintendo’s reuse of potentiometers that were prone to drifting in the last generation of Pro controllers. The Nintendo Switch 2, therefore, uses the same type of sticks.

Making matters worse, the low-profile design of the sticks correlates with high failure rates.

This is a piss poor excuse for a controller. I see a cash grab riding high on the Nintendo brand. Many of these controllers are going to end up as e-waste.

Nintendo Switch 2
The Switch 2 Needed A Revamped Controller

The channel also pointed to positives like the easily replaceable headphone jack, but these were far and few between.

For the most part, this controller appears to be a disaster, especially for a large company like Nintendo. The situation is only made worse by the fact that the gaming giant might raise prices further in the coming months.

Do you own one of the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controllers? Have you noticed any stick drift? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

Following Layoffs, Xbox Draws Criticism For Using Low-Quality AI Image To Hire Employees

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft has laid off around 15,000 employees this year, which has raised many concerns.
  • The gaming giant did so to invest more in AI, as it is apparently the future.
  • Ironically, the company is hiring more people in the graphics department with a really poorly generated AI image.

Microsoft recently laid off thousands of employees in two waves. The first one occurred a few weeks ago, when the company laid off around 4,000 employees. Now, just recently, in another wave, the company cut a whopping 9,000 jobs.

This started a massive controversy, which caused fans to even boycott Xbox by cancelling their Game Pass subscription. Following the layoffs and backlash, the gaming giant is again hiring people, but is using a really poorly generated AI image

Why it matters: Justifying layoffs in any industry almost never works out unless the whole team messes up pretty badly, like Firewalk Studios did with Concord.

Xbox Hiring More People Following Layoffs
Xbox Hiring More People Following Layoffs With A Poorly Animated Image

The Principal Lead Development of the Xbox Graphics team, Mike Matsel, recently posted on LinkedIn about hiring people for the concerned department.

The Xbox Graphics team is hiring folks with experience with device drivers, GPU performance, or related validation or engineering system experience.

-Mike Mastel

Above, you can see how poorly the hiring image is, and it clearly looks like an AI one. The screen is also on the backside of the monitor, and the table isn’t complete. This is pretty ironic, given that Microsoft laid off thousands of employees to invest more in AI.

Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark Was Cancelled Due To The Layoffs

For those who may say it is a transparent display, it clearly doesn’t look like one at all. This is pretty embarrassing for the company as it laid off employees to focus on the AI technology, and the lead of one of its main departments can’t use the same tech.

While laying off employees is unfortunate, almost every company does so. In fact, Sony has laid more many more employees than Microsoft. For those not in the know, Sony has laid off around 5 times more employees than Microsoft since 2008.

However, laying off people to invest in something and not being able to utilise it properly is something else. Even fans are claiming it’s embarrassing and lazy, and you can’t blame them now, can you?

PS6 Could Double The Performance Of The PS5 Pro, Claims Leaker

Story Highlight
  • The PS6 could have double the performance of the PS5 Pro thanks to Zen 6.
  • It could match the performance of a PC with RTX 4090, which is great for 4K gaming.
  • Combined with the PSSR tech, we could see a significant increase in performance.

The PlayStation 6 is years away at this point, but the rumors about its expected performance have already started surfacing on the internet. The PS5 Pro is undoubtedly the strongest console ever, but the PS6 will take things up a notch.

According to a new rumor, the PS6’s performance could be double that of the PS5 Pro. It could be comparable to an RTX 4090, which, despite the launch of the RTX 5000 series, is still one of the fastest consumer-grade GPUs.

Why it matters: When the PS5 first launched, it promised gaming at 4K 120 FPS on the box. However, that isn’t the case in most scenarios, but the PS6 could be the first to do so, if the rumors are to be believed.

In a recent video Moore’s Law is Dead, talked about the performance of the next Sony console. He said that the PS6 will be twice as fast as the PS5 Pro. Combined with the latest PSSR tech, we could see a significant performance jump.

He also compared the performance to an RTX 4090. For context, the PS5 Pro is roughly equivalent to an RTX 4070, which is a great GPU for 1440p gaming. However, the RTX 4090 is quite capable of 4K gaming as well.

PS6-AMD-Zen
PS6 is expected to double the performance of the PS5 Pro

Therefore, combined with PSSR, the PS6 might finally be able to run most games at 4K 120 FPS, and might even hit 8K in certain less-demanding titles. For now, take this with a grain of salt, considering there hasn’t been any official information yet.

Death Stranding 2 Also Suffers From Repeated Helpful Gameplay Tips Like God Of War Ragnarok

Story Highlight
  • Fans are criticizing Death Stranding 2 because Dollman keeps repeating gameplay reminders, like Atreus in God of War Ragnarok.
  • Many posts on Reddit have fans demanding an option to be added to mute Dollman or to stop him from repeating dialogue.
  • Many Sony games feature NPCs who continue giving repeated tips and annoying advice throughout gameplay.

Death Stranding 2 has performed so well that some are calling it the best 2025 GOTY contender, while others claim it to be one of the best sequels in gaming history. While it may also have raised the bar for PS5 visuals, a major issue is still making fans upset with the game.

Many players have taken to social media to show disappointment with Dollman, a new NPC, constantly repeating reminders and gameplay tips while assisting Sam in his long travels. This is similar to the annoying tips from Atreus in God of War Ragnarok.

Why it matters: The issue of repeated tips by NPCs highlights a greater trend in modern AAA gaming: developers try their best to hand-hold gamers with visual and audio pointers throughout gameplay, which kills the sense of discovery.

Many Death Stranding 2 players are making memes about throwing Dollman off a cliff after hearing his constant reminders in gameplay. The dialogues only annoy the players who already know that they dropped the cargo or are using a sniper rifle without a silencer.

Unlike the original Death Stranding, Sam travels alongside Dollman for much of the game. Therefore, fans are suggesting that developers either add a button to mute Dollman or at least stop him from repeating the same reminders every time an accident happens.

Despite the repeated dialogue issue, Dollman as a character has been much appreciated by Death Stranding 2 fans for being a compassionate and fun companion to be around.

Death Stranding 2
Besides this dilemma, Death Stranding 2 has been dubbed a good narrative experience by fans.

In the past, Death Stranding 2 has also been rated poorly for having ‘questionable tropes around women,’ and it also faced a massive performance bug that affected many; the bug would heat up the PS5s and crash the game.

Do you think the Death Stranding 2 experience is ruined by having Dollman constantly repeating the same tips and reminders during gameplay, or is it still bearable? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers Forum.

MachineGames Job Listing Suggests Indiana Jones Sequel Development Is Underway

Story Highlight
  • MachineGames launched Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to plenty of success and acclaim last year.
  • We discovered a job listing from the studio that suggests the team is now hiring for a sequel.
  • This job ad emphasizes experience with the film industry on multiple occasions, suggesting a link with the Indiana Jones IP.

MachineGames launched the first major Indiana Jones game in a long while last year. Based on the studio’s expertise in narrative and first-person gameplay, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle boasted many of the same qualities that the studio was known for.

This meant that the project became a major success right off the bat, and discussions regarding a sequel began making the rounds. Less than a full year after the game’s original release, Tech4Gamers discovered that the studio is hiring a Senior Concept Artist for this potential sequel.

Why it matters: Fans of the Indiana Jones IP have seen next to no adaptations based on the character over the last two decades.

Looking at the job listing, two points in the Qualifications and Preferred Skills sections seem to be of particular interest.

For starters, we noted that the Qualifications section asks for experience with the game and film industry. In a similar manner, the Preferred Skills section points to familiarity with the entertainment industry, including films.

Experience working in the game and/or film industry.

Being familiar with the industry of entertainment (such as films).

Looking at both points in a broader context, Indiana Jones being the focus of MachineGames’ next AAA production seems like a valid conclusion. It is important to note that the studio is hiring a Senior Concept Artist for this project, so it is likely very early on in development.

Given the fact that the team only recently launched the PS5 port of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the sequel being in the conception phase would also make a lot of sense.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
The Studio’s Latest Release Combines 1st and 3rd Person Gameplay

Moreover, reports indicated that the team had recently cancelled a long-standing project, primarily believed to be related to the Wolfenstein IP. As such, all signs point to the studio moving forward with an Indiana Jones sequel.

There is still a lot that remains a mystery about the Indiana Jones sequel, considering how the first game marked a collaboration between both MachineGames and Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard.

Whether the veteran director will return for the sequel remains a mystery for now, but it seems nearly certain that the studio has begun hiring to expand the series with future entries.

What do you think about this report? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

Push For Indie Game Development Will Rescue The Gaming Industry, Says Dev

Story Highlight
  • Unleashed Studio Entertainment says a push for independent gaming development will save the gaming industry.
  • AAA titles have been failing due to poor direction from the publishers, creating an unfavourable environment for the gaming industry.
  • AA and indie titles continue to enjoy success due to their creative freedom and ability to take risks, which resonate well with gamers.

The gaming industry has never been in such a dire state, with widespread layoffs resulting from the poor performance of AAA video games that fail to resonate with customers.

On the other hand, AA and indie titles are thriving, mainly because they have complete autonomy over their projects without a publisher steering them.

Now, an indie studio has come forward to address the ongoing situation, saying the push for independent game development will be the answer to saving the gaming industry.

Why it matters: Big publishers need to realise what gamers want instead of deciding it themselves. Corporations have ruined gaming so far, and indie devs are the only ones passionate about the craft.

Indie Game Development To Save The Industry
Unleashed Studio Entertainment On Gaming Industry’s Future || LinkedIn

Unleashed Studio Entertainment, a solo development game studio based in San Diego, recently made this post on LinkedIn.

According to the studio, solo developers and small indie teams are the answer to saving the gaming industry. The studio also wants to take gaming back where it belongs, and that is to gamers.

This statement is true because big publishers have stagnated, fixated on making money by following live service models or chasing trends, desperate to recreate the successes of other blockbusters.

Amidst this, AA, indie, and solo developers are being creative and not afraid to take risks. This route has not only guaranteed them success but also raised the question of whether AAA or AAAA games are even sustainable anymore.

Indie AA Games
Half of Steam’s best-performing titles of last year were either AAA or indie titles.

Recent successes like Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Palworld, Helldivers 2, and others are testaments to this matter. This should be a wake-up call for big publishers like EA and Ubisoft, who need to reanalyse their direction before further spiralling down from rock bottom.

Do you believe that indie gaming is the answer to the disaster going on in the industry? Let us know your thoughts on this matter in the comments below or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

Sony May Have Canceled Multiple Bend Studio Projects

Story Highlight
  • The LinkedIn profile of Bend Studio game designer Jacob Fieth suggests that Sony may have canceled multiple projects from the team.
  • The studio has worked on ‘multiple canceled/unannounced projects’ over the years, but it has not hinted at any other entry yet.
  • Following the cancellation of the live-service game, Bend was allegedly spinning up a new project and got hit with massive layoffs.

Sony had an awakening and killed multiple live-service games that were in development earlier this year. Bend Studio’s AAA live-service game also got canned, and since then, reports have suggested that the developers were starting a new game.

The studio was also hit by at least two layoffs following the cancellation, with the second one affecting 40 staff members and 30% of the total developers.

Now, the LinkedIn profile of Bend Studio game designer Jacob Fieth reveals that Sony or Bend executives may have also internally canceled a plethora of other projects.

Why it matters: It appears that the situation at Bend Studio might be more dire if the rising speculations are to be believed. The unexpected layoffs affecting 30% of staff a few months ago also massively harmed the morale of the company.

The profile of Bend’s game designer suggests multiple games have been canceled over the years.

The LinkedIn profile lists that the game designer has worked on ‘multiple canceled/unannounced projects’ since 2019.

After Days Gone, Bend Studio has not yet released another original game, besides Days Gone Remastered, and only a single new, unknown title was rumored to be starting development a few months ago.

Based on these tidbits, the most likely outcome indicates that Sony or Bend executives may have canceled some other in-development projects over the years. It’s unclear what these unannounced games could have been since no official details exist regarding them.

Days Gone 2 Bend Studio
The Days Gone franchise was originally meant to be a trilogy by the studio.

Bend was also planning on making Days Gone a trilogy before those prospects were shut down entirely.

Regardless, the future of the company looks quite worrisome because it’s unclear what became of the new game that was starting development before the layoffs.

Do you think Bend Studio suffering layoffs means another unannounced game was silently canned, or are these rumors too unrealistic to consider? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Xbox’s Recently Closed Studio The Initiative Was Said To Be ‘AAAA Team’

Story Highlight
  • Xbox recently shut down The Initiative and cancelled Perfect Dark after nearly five years of development.
  • In 2020, the gaming giant referred to this developer as a ‘AAAA team.’
  • Similar terminology was used by Ubisoft when describing a major project like Skull and Bones.

Xbox’s latest wave of layoffs was followed by multiple cancellations and studio closures. Among the more disheartening announcements was the revelation that Perfect Dark was cancelled and The Initiative was being shut down.

This information becomes even more surprising when considering the fact that Xbox previously referred to The Initiative as a fully AAAA team.

Why it matters: Perfect Dark’s recent gameplay demo from 2024 showed a lot of potential. Fans were shocked when the game was cancelled because many thought Perfect Dark could have been a generation-defining exclusive for Xbox.

Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark Was Last Seen In 2024

Five years ago, Microsoft unveiled the Perfect Dark reboot for the first time, describing it as an ambitious project, with Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative being tasked to reintroduce this classic to a new generation.

However, Microsoft job listings before this referred to The Initiative as a AAAA team. Although these listings have since been deleted, existing headlines and discussions from 2020 highlight that the ‘AAAA studio’ terminology was used commonly for The Initiative.

For context, the term is largely believed to have been coined by Ubisoft. The French gaming giant referred to games like Skull and Bones and Far Cry 6 as ‘AAAA projects,‘ highlighting even more significant investments than traditional AAA projects.

Unfortunately, it seems the ‘AAAA studio’ label could not save The Initiative. To Ubisoft’s credit, the gaming giant continued supporting Skull and Bones for well over seven years through a tumultuous development cycle.

Following Perfect Dark’s cancellation, an actor has even called upon the fans to help bring the game back. However, given Microsoft’s history of studio closures, this seems very unlikely.

What do you think about the ‘AAAA studio’ label for The Initiative? Do you think Xbox did a poor job managing such an ambitious project? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
