Nvidia Faces Big Challenge Due To Rising Memory Prices!

Story Highlight
  • The RTX 50 Super lineup from Nvidia was rumored for months, but new reports suggest it has been cancelled.
  • Nvidia originally planned to use 3GB GDDR7 chips for the Super series, but these plans were thwarted by rising DRAM prices.
  • Samsung and other memory suppliers increased prices as much as 30% due to recent demand for AI and data centers.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 Super series has been rumored for a while. In addition to more powerful GPUs, this lineup is expected to offer more memory for each tier of the RTX 50 family, addressing the major criticism regarding Nvidia’s recent product stack.

Unfortunately, it seems Nvidia has run into poor timing with this refresh. According to the latest report, the RTX 50 Super series may now be cancelled.

Why it matters: AI and data center workloads have led to a surge in demand for memory. Major suppliers like Samsung have increased prices up to 30% already.

As reported by Uniko’s Hardware, Nvidia may be forced to cancel the RTX 50 Super series due to DRAM shortages.

For context, the gaming giant planned to use the brand new 3GB GDDR7 memory chips to offer more memory with its upcoming graphics cards, with a GPU like the RTX 5070 Ti shipping with 24GB of VRAM.

These 3GB GDDR7 chips have not been used in GPUs before, and it seems the recent DRAM price hikes have put Nvidia in a difficult position. The report even states that current RTX 50 prices could go up due to the memory situation.

Nvidia has yet to officially comment on the matter for now. The gaming giant could, therefore, cancel the Super lineup internally and move on with plans for the RTX 6000 lineup.

Still, it may be worth taking this news with a slight grain of salt. The current impact of rising memory prices is undeniable, so there is reason to believe this report. However, it’s always best to wait for more sources to chime in.

The RTX 50 lineup originally debuted earlier this year and did not hit MSRP until recently. This series has also faced various software issues, so consumers will not be happy if Nvidia ends up increasing prices as the report suggests.
