Story Expansion And Big Surprise Coming Soon!

Story Highlights
  • Mortal Kombat 1 will be NetherRealm Studios’ most supported game.
  • A new story mode expansion is being prepared for the game.
  • Ed Boon teased a big surprise, and a second Kombat Pack is also expected.

Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for less than three months and has already taken the fighting game world by storm.

With great reviews and 3 million copies sold, this title has begun a new age for this series. Following the launch, the first wave of DLC has been introduced recently, with Omni-Man joining the roster of fighters.

While the first Kombat Pack has already been confirmed, Ed Boon is teasing additional DLC for the game, including more story content.

Why it matters: Mortal Kombat has always had multiple DLC fighters, but story mode expansions were not released for this IP until recently. Therefore, fans did not expect a story DLC for Mortal Kombat 1.

As spotted by WesleyLPBR, Ed Boon confirmed additional story mode content during CCXP 2023. Pointing to the Aftermath expansion from Mortal Kombat 11, the developer said:

“We’re going to release a second part with more story, and we have a big surprise after that.”

Ed Boon also reiterated NetherRealm Studios’ goal to make this entry the most supported Mortal Kombat game.

In the past, the Aftermath expansion introduced new characters to Mortal Kombat 11. It also came with a fully-fledged story mode, offering around the same amount of content as the game’s original narrative.

Therefore, fans can expect a similar expansion for Mortal Kombat 1. As for the big surprise, Ed Boon did not reveal much, and this is anybody’s guess for now. However, a second Kombat Pack is expected after the first wave of characters.

Mortal Kombat 1

According to leaks going around, the likes of Conan the Barbarian, Cyrax, and Sektor are expected in this pack. Cyrax, in particular, might have gone through a major revision, being portrayed as a female cyborg.

Still, these leaks are yet to be confirmed.

This support will be crucial to the longevity of Mortal Kombat 1. It was recently noted that the game was falling behind its predecessors in terms of player counts, but constant content updates could ensure players revisit the game frequently.
