Marathon Going Through All Sorts of Troubles!

Story Highlights
  • A journalist has revealed that the development of Marathon at Bungie isn’t going too well.
  • The game missed its deadline for this year, and the developers are pessimistic about next year’s targets.
  • Troubles at Bungie Entertainment have been quite recurrent ever since PlayStation acquired the studio.

Bungie has been experiencing all sorts of troubles ever since Sony acquired it. After the recent layoffs, Sony took over the majority of the company. However, it has been revealed that Marathon’s development isn’t going great.

Why it matters: Marathon is supposed to be Bungie’s next big title. As the studio continues to struggle, many are doubtful about its ability to deliver a successful release for PlayStation.

According to reporter Jason Schreier, the sentiment around Marathon at Bungie isn’t great. The sci-fi shooter was supposed to be released in 2024 but has now slipped to 2025. Some developers say it might not even meet the new deadline either.

Not great from what I’ve heard (Marathon’s development). There’s a reason it was planned for this year and slipped to a whole year.

Marathon also lost its original director a few months ago. Moreover, the game is quite different from what Bungie fans have come to expect, making the project quite challenging for now.

Destiny 3 Bungie Survey
Bungie is going through a very tough time.

Things at Bungie have been quite problematic for the last few months. Sony cut 17% of the team’s workforce amid a new focus on restructuring and optimization. A report also emerged stating that PlayStation sees Bungie as a failed acquisition.

Now, PlayStation has taken over the studio and will make most of the decisions. However, this turmoil puts Marathon at risk. Even if the game meets its targets, there is no guarantee that it will have a positive reception.

Considering Destiny 2’s state in the last few years, Marathon will have a difficult time making a name for itself in a saturated live service market.
