- Larian’s technical director has stated that there will be no limitation to how big an act can be in Divinity.
- Due to upgrades to the in-house engine, restrictions that affected Baldur’s Gate 3 have been removed.
- The studio previously stated that the upcoming RPG will be its biggest game yet.
Ever since the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios has become a sensation in the gaming world. The 2023 title has now sold over 20 million copies worldwide and is still averaging a respectable concurrent player count on Steam 3 years after launching.
The game was so culturally important that CD Projekt Red is taking direct inspiration from it for The Witcher 4. Hence, it isn’t surprising that fans are hyped for Larian’s next game, Divinity. If a developer from the studio is to be believed, the upcoming title will be even bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3.
Why it matters: Considering how innovative and engaging Baldur’s Gate 3 was, Larian developing Divinity with a better engine that lets the studio do whatever it wants is enough to sell the RPG to most people.

While talking to Edge Magazine, Larian’s technical director Bert Van Semmertier stated that there will be no limitation on how big an act could be in Divinity.
A longstanding limitation we had in multiplayer is that players could not cross acts individually, and this had an impact on how we built our world. In the next iteration of our engine, this is a limitation we have completely removed. There is no limitation anymore on how big an act can be.
The developer explained that the studio’s in-house engine has been upgraded for the upcoming RPG, and the restriction that didn’t allow players to cross acts individually in multiplayer has been removed.
According to Van Semmertier, the game world and story in Baldur’s Gate 3 were impacted by this multiplayer restriction as developers needed to structure the narrative in a certain way. However, now that Larian isn’t handcuffed by this aspect of the engine while developing Divinity, the RPG can be even bigger.

The studio has previously stated that the upcoming title will be its biggest game yet, and this upgraded version of the Divinity engine is the key to achieving this result.
