Helldivers 2 Hits 255K Concurrent Steam Players As Growth Continues

39th Biggest Steam Game By Player Count!

Story Highlights
  • Helldivers 2 has managed to hit a peak player count of over 255K on Steam.
  • It’s the 39th biggest game on Steam in terms of the concurrent player counts.
  • The general thoughts are also mostly positive after over 46K reviews on Steam.

Helldivers 2’s successful runs seem to be far from over. After beating the likes of God of War to become Sony’s biggest launch on PC, the game has now reached a massive peak of 255K concurrent players.

Why it matters: This co-op-focused title is Sony’s attempt to jump into the very saturated market of live service gaming, and it seems to have struck gold on the first major attempt.

With this many players, the action game has become Steam’s 39th biggest in history, overtaking various notable names. This puts it ahead of games like Team Fortress 2, Payday 2, and more. It is also the only PlayStation game that has surpassed 250K concurrent players on the PC platform.

The co-op title was already destined to be a recipe for success as it became Steam’s best-selling game before launch. However, it has rapidly grown since then, even surprising the developers.

With constant support, Arrowhead Game Studios has managed to stay on top of the rising need to accommodate more players each day. The studio has increased server capacity at various times, but it might need to make further changes amid the rapidly growing player base.

Since launch, Helldivers 2 has also collected 46K Steam reviews. Like before, the overall reviews continue to remain positive, with the positive reviews rising to nearly 80%. This is a massive improvement over the mixed impressions at launch.

Further adding to the success is the fact that just three days post-launch, Helldivers 2 achieved the milestone of nearly 1 million copies sold. At the time of writing, SteamDB still shows 100K active players in the game.

While Helldivers 2 could have been considered an anticipated release based on its predecessor’s reputation, this reception was unprecedented.

The success has likely encouraged PlayStation to explore its options for more frequent PC releases. Perhaps this could be the beginning of first-party games heading to PC on day one, a scenario we hope to see.

Helldivers 2 has also led to higher expectations for the rest of Sony’s live-service slate. While many had previously written off games like Concord and Fairgame$, audiences are more willing to try them before jumping to conclusions.
