Helldivers 2 Dev Wants To Match The Success of Sony IPs Like God of War

It's The Director's Childhood Dream!

Story Highlight
  • A tweet discussing the best PlayStation and Nintendo games prompted a response from the Helldivers 2 director.
  • This tweet included the biggest PlayStation IPs, but Helldivers 2 was nowhere to be found.
  • The director dreams of seeing the game become as big as God of War one day.

Helldivers 2 is one of the wild cards of 2024, with very positive reviews on Steam. In this era, releasing a multiplayer shooter game is extremely risky as the competition is already dominated by the likes of Call of Duty, CS2, and Fortnite.

However, Helldivers 2 has been immensely successful, as it is still the top-seller on Steam nearly two months after its release. The game also dominated February as the highest-grossing title.

However, the director doesn’t want to stop here. His ultimate goal is to see this franchise become as big as God of War and Uncharted.

Why it matters: God of War and Uncharted instantly come to mind when thinking about PlayStation. Therefore, director Johan Pilestedt has set a high bar for his franchise, and he believes there is a real possibility that the bar will be met.

A user on X/Twitter shared a collage of two pictures that featured characters from PlayStation and Nintendo. Among them, many iconic characters were included, but no one from Helldivers was present.

While many have agreed with the tweet, the director of Helldivers 2 suddenly joined the conversation, asking why PlayStation’s democracy champs were left out of the collage.

In response, a user claimed that Helldivers 2 is nowhere near as influential as the other characters featured on the list. However, the user still acknowledged the game’s current success.

Unsurprisingly, the director agreed with the statement but added that he dreams of seeing the IP making it on such lists someday.

It might be in the future. It’s a childhood dream come true.

Helldivers 2 Continues To Dominate The Competition on Steam

At this rate, it would not be shocking to see the director’s dream come true. Helldivers 2 has quickly become popular industry-wide. The game is not limited to PlayStation, with even Xbox users looking to join the fight for democracy.

Compared to this IP, God of War and Uncharted have been famous for over a decade. Therefore, they certainly had a major headstart. Still, Arrowhead Game Studios’ offering is on track to make its own place within the ecosystem.

Having sold 8 million units, this co-op shooter is undoubtedly PlayStation’s biggest success of 2024. Sony is likely looking toward more support and expansion of this series in the future, which should prove an essential step in the journey to rivaling these giant franchises.
