"We Want Our Hardware To Win"

Story Highlight
  • The Xbox CEO says that gaming hardware is still a key component of their brand.
  • Now lacking exclusivity due to its multiplatform strategy, Xbox aims to compete with hardware capabilities.
  • The next-gen Xbox consoles could arrive in 2026, a year before PlayStation 6, as per reports.

Xbox has been making some unorthodox decisions for the past few years, and many fans have even questioned its long-term goals and whether the gaming giant wants to continue making consoles.

However, in a new interview, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer stated that the hardware part of the brand is still integral. Moreover, he said that he isn’t trying to restrict any game from other platforms.

Why it matters: Due to Xbox’s multiplatform strategy, it was speculated that the gaming giant would become a publisher instead of a console manufacturer. This news confirms that it still plans to be a key player in the hardware league.

The Next Generation Will Mark Microsoft’s Debut In The Handheld Console Market

In an interview with Gamertag Radio, Phil Spencer discussed his plans for future hardware.

I look at hardware as a critical part of what we do, but not trying to gatekeep the games off of other places.

During the same interview, he pointed out how Xbox’s hardware should win based on its own merits instead of exclusives. Much like the Xbox Series X was more powerful than the PS5, Phil Spencer wants future hardware to offer key advantages that make it desirable.

We want our hardware to win based on the capabilities we have.

Still, from this point, Xbox’s roadmap looks tougher than ever. The gaming giant will no longer have exclusive titles to attract people to its platform, and multiplatform releases will undermine the benefits of recent acquisitions.

The Age Of Console Exclusivity Is Seemingly Over

If past reports hold true, the next Xbox consoles will be released in 2026, tracking one year ahead of the next-gen PlayStation console, giving Microsoft a potential edge.

Moreover, the CEO teased what will be Xbox’s first handheld console. Previously, Xbox revealed its plan to extend its ecosystem to other handheld consoles, and it seems that Xbox wants to take over the handheld market.
