- The newer Hitman games transformed the franchise into a full sandbox experience, offering infinite possibilities for players to explore and replay with each mission.
- The game was perfect for a co-op mode, and while Hitman 2 featured co-op, it was limited to Sniper mode only.
- Inspired by Hitman 2’s Ghost Mode, a fan developed a co-op mod for Hitman as a concept to showcase how co-op gameplay would work with Hitman.
Hitman is my favorite stealth gaming franchise of all time, and the latest trilogy transformed the once-linear game into a sandbox with a more cinematic approach.
It’s safe to say that IO Interactive’s attempt was more than successful. Each map in the trilogy is more than rememberable and has tons of replayability to date.
The complete trilogy is now summarized into one main entry, which also makes the game a live-action model. The game also features several new modes, both existing and newer. However, if one thing is missing from the game, it is an actual co-op mode.
Why It Matters: Co-op gameplay suits stealth games well, and the new Hitman environments are perfect for two players. Even Sniper Elite has a co-op mode, so why not the Hitman games?
These Newer Hitman Games Are Best Designed For A Co-op Mode
IO Interactive has significantly changed its approach with the latest Hitman trilogy, straying from a conventional narrative style and leaning towards being an assassination simulator.
I’ve already mentioned how these newer Hitman games have taken a sandbox stealth approach, and sometimes, the game even offers multiple targets. This is where a co-op mode would work best.
The role-playing would be next level with a co-op mode, with players working together to take down targets individually or simultaneously. Moreover, the approach and playstyles would also perfectly complement each other.
Take this, for instance: one person would be a sniper taking out one target while the other takes out the second. One could cause a distraction, while the other would sneak in. This would require some core gameplay changes, but that’s possible in Hitman, with its levels designed for insane customization, changes, and, most importantly, replayability.
Splitting objectives, making the game even tougher, limiting item use, or just vamping the security, a co-op mode would work in many ways. There was a co-op option in Hitman 2, but it was unfortunately limited to Sniper mode only.
Hitman 2’s Ghost Mode Inspired This One Co-op Mode
Multiplayer mod for Hitman World of Assassination (co-op & versus) – teaser

Hitman 2 originally featured a multiplayer mode called Ghost Mode. It was a highly competitive and fun experience where two players raced to be the first to score 10 points by eliminating targets.
While Ghost Mode wasn’t exactly a co-op experience, it was a head-to-head race to kill targets faster than the other player. However, the mode had limited maps and little player interaction, making it a failure.
Despite being shut down, Ghost Mode inspired a fan to develop a co-op mode. Unfortunately, this fan-made mode was never released due to concerns about piracy and technical issues. The fan had created custom game modes with adjustable parameters to balance the skill gap between players.
Though still a concept, the mod was open-source, and many features could have been refined. However, gameplay footage shows that a co-op mode in Hitman is not only possible but looks incredibly fun.
I really hope IO Interactive considers adding a proper co-op mode in future Hitman games and finally brings this concept to life.
