Final Fantasy 16 Tops PS5 Downloads In Japan For July

Also Stayed In Top 5 In The US!

Final Fantasy 16 is the latest blockbuster title from Square Enix. Having launched in June, the game continues to be popular for PS5 owners worldwide. Square Enix has confirmed that the game sold well, reaching over 3 million sales in the first week.

Unsurprisingly, the JRPG has been a hit in Japan. The latest update from PlayStation also confirms that it became the best-selling PS5 title on the Japanese PSN store last month.

Why it matters: Recept reports have claimed that Square Enix executives had a high bar for Final Fantasy 16. Despite its success, many were hoping for more sales. However, at its current rate, the game may eventually meet these expectations.

Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16 outsold popular games like Street Fighter 6 on the digital storefront in Japan.

Recent launches like Exoprimal were also unable to compete. On the other hand, it continues to be popular in the US and Canada. While GTA 5 took the top spot in these regions, Final Fantasy 16 stayed in the top 5 most downloaded games.

Before its launch, many had expressed concerns about Final Fantasy’s performance in Japan. The latest game takes a more action-focused approach instead of the traditional turn-based combat seen in previous entries and other JRPGs.

This led to concerns that Japanese gamers may not be too fond of the release. However, this does not appear to be the case. The PS5 has also sold over 4 million units in the region, which likely motivated new buyers to pick up the game alongside the console.

It should be noted that Square Enix has recouped the budget for Final Fantasy 16 with the existing sales. Therefore, any additional sales will go toward profits.

In addition to the current sales, Final Fantasy 16 is expected to see a massive boost in the coming months. The game will eventually arrive on PC, bringing it to a whole new audience.

PlayStation’s exclusivity contract lasts for six months, but it may take longer to optimize for the platform, with Square Enix hoping to offer a quality experience for PC users.
