Doom: The Dark Ages is the biggest upcoming blockbuster expected to shake the industry. Featuring the biggest single-player experience in the series and incredibly strong gameplay, this first-person shooter entry could be Doom’s most popular to date.

However, fans of physical games might not be too happy with how Doom: The Dark Ages is delivered on disc. As per reports, an internet connection will be required to install the game.

Why it matters: Requiring an internet connection for games is becoming a common trend, but users who prefer physical copies are usually against this trend.

With Doom: The Dark Ages expected to launch next week, early copies of the title are already in the wild.

Reports are now flooding X and various other websites, with multiple users indicating that id Software and Bethesda do not include the full game on disc. In fact, the PS5 copy is limited to just 85MB of data.

As such, it seems Doom: The Dark Ages will require a full download, even for owners of the physical edition. The PS5 box art also states that an internet connection is required to play the game.

Although many believe the internet requirement will be limited to the first boot, Bethesda and id Software have yet to offer clarification on the matter.

The situation is expected to be similar on Xbox, with the disc containing just 324MB of data. This means that neither version of the game offers a satisfactory physical edition.

On one hand, this approach will allow Bethesda to prevent leaks ahead of the game’s upcoming release. However, those with slower internet will receive no benefit from opting for the physical release instead of the digital edition.
