Film Adaptation Also In Development!

Story Highlights
  • Death Stranding was released four years ago by Hideo Kojima.
  • Last year, it was revealed that the game surpassed 10 million players.
  • The game has just reached 16 million players.

After successfully moving away from the Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima decided to work on a new IP, Death Stranding. It has been over four years since the first game in this series was released, and it became an instant hit due to its unique premise in 2020.

In late 2022, Hideo Kojima confirmed that the game had crossed over 10 million players. One year later, Death Stranding has topped 16 million players.

Why it matters: A game like Death Stranding was expected to remain obscure due to its non-traditional gameplay loop of inventory management and deliveries with very little combat.

Death Stranding was initially criticized for breaking away from the norm. Many players found the gameplay of Sam’s deliveries monotonous since they did not find the typical action combat in this title.

In no time, this release was dubbed a ‘walking simulator’ by many. However, a few years later, players appear to have come around to Death Stranding and its unique concept.

Largely carried by its narrative and characters, this game had already reached over 6 million players after the first year. However, its addition to various subscription services along with discounts has allowed it to reach a bigger audience.

Announcing the new milestone, Kojima Productions confirms a collaboration with A24. A movie adaptation based on the IP is currently being worked on, further expanding this universe through other forms of entertainment.

Apart from the movie, Death Stranding 2 is in development.

This game will see Norman Reedus returning as Sam. Announced last year, Hideo Kojima has remained tight-lipped about the project despite expectations of a new trailer at The Game Awards.

The developer recently showcased OD through a new trailer. This is the second major project from Hideo Kojima, with the studio partnering with Xbox for this game.

Still, Death Stranding remains Kojima Productions’ biggest focus, and it is great to see the franchise being relevant after four years.
