Analysis Shows Days Gone Remastered Looks Comparatively Worse Than The Original On The PS5

A Remaster Nobody Asked For!

Story Highlight
  • Days Gone remastered looks worse than the base game on the PS5 during performance mode.
  • The image quality takes a hit.
  • Quality mode looks much better with detail resolution, but it comes with a drawback of being limited to 30FPS.

While fans have been yearning for a continuation of the Days Gone series, Bend Studios had other plans. They recently released the remastered version of the 2019 game, which fans have found to their liking.

Deep diving into the game, the visual quality is much better with the remastered version. However, in some instances, image quality takes a hit, even looking worse than the base version, both running on the same PS5 console.

Why it matters: A remaster releasing for the PS5 looking worse than the base game is quite disappointing, especially when the developer promised a truly next-gen experience.

Digital Foundry recently published an in-depth review of Days Gone Remastered running on the PS5 console.

Whilst running in performance mode, the image quality is worse than the base game running on the same PS5. The image loses its sharpness with less clarity overall and becomes soft-looking.

However, on Quality mode, the updated resolution does make a huge difference in the image quality and textures on the models, but it comes with its own drawback of being limited to just 30FPS on native 4k resolution.

For contrast, the PS4 version ran at 4k 60FPS on the PS5. On the other hand, the performance mode only offers a 1440p resolution at 60FPS.

The PS5 Pro gets a new enhanced mode, which runs the game on an upscaled 4k resolution with 60FPS and some decent visuals; definitely the best way to play the game.

The biggest change with the new version is the lighting. Days Gone Remastered features a completely overhauled lighting that appears to be much darker compared to the base game.

During nighttime, the absence of moonlight and a darker tone really helps feel Central Oregon as a true post-apocalyptic world, and the horror element is significantly ramped up. Additionally, the night sky now shows more stars, reflecting the absence of pollution after the zombie outbreak wiped out most of humanity.
