Hadar Is CDPR's Entirely New And First Original IP!

Story Highlight
  • CDPR is currently working on Project Hadar, a brand new and original IP.
  • A job listing for a Senior Gameplay Designer, spotted by us, hints at the game being a melee-combat-focused RPG.
  • The project is currently in pre-production, so details remain slim for the time being.

CDPR has multiple ambitious projects in the works at the moment. The Witcher 4 is the furthest ahead in production, and others, like the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, are also making solid progress. Elsewhere, the team has begun the conception of its first original IP.

Dubbed Project Hadar, this franchise is set to take players on a new adventure in a completely original universe and setting. Although other details remain slim, Tech4Gamers has found a job listing for a Senior Gameplay Designer that suggests the title will be primarily based around melee combat.

Why it matters: CDPR became a household name after selling millions of copies of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, so fans are excited to see what the team will do with its first original IP.

CDPR’s job listing mentions experience with RPG/Action titles as a primary qualification for the role. This isn’t surprising considering the team specializes in RPGs, and Project Hadar was always expected to lean into the studio’s RPG roots.

However, we noted that the listing also states that experience with melee-oriented combat is preferred. This is important since CDPR has a diverse portfolio, and the team’s latest release, Cyberpunk 2077, branched away from melee combat.

Although melee combat still played a role in Cyberpunk 2077, the game was primarily a first-person shooter. Anyhow, the job listing suggests Project Hadar will feature a combat system more akin to The Witcher franchise.

Previously, CDPR also expressed an interest in specifically improving the combat of The Witcher franchise with the upcoming fourth mainline release. The experience gained from this process could help shape the melee gameplay of Project Hadar.

Currently, CDPR is more focused on world design and narrative, but the job listing suggests that the team has some idea of the core gameplay design in mind.

Unfortunately, little else is known about the game at the time of writing. Project Hadar is still in its early stages of development, so the game may undergo numerous changes by the time it is released.
