Dedicated Xbox Handheld To Launch In 2027!

Story Highlight
  • The first images and specs for Asus ROG Ally 2 have been leaked.
  • The black variant is the previously rumored Xbox handheld.
  • Both handhelds feature strong specs and are expected to be revealed soon.

The Xbox handheld ‘Project Kennan’ has been rumored to be in development for some time now, in collaboration with Asus. The Taiwan-based manufacturer posted the first teaser for the handheld console a short while ago.

Today, the first hardware leaks on the handheld have surfaced. Project Kennan is a variant of Asus ROG Ally 2 and packs a serious punch that will give the handheld market tough competition.

Why it matters: The handheld console market has seen a resurgence in recent years and can finally run AAA games. Xbox will enter the handheld market for the first time, and it’s already looking to be a success for them.

These photos were first published under the U.S. FCC and spotted by Videocardz. The Asus ROG Ally 2 features two variants: a white handheld that will succeed the first ROG Ally and a black variant, a dedicated Xbox handheld variant.

The consoles’ specs are also mentioned, and it seems they’ll be the most powerful handhelds to date. Both variants feature a 7-inch 120Hz display. The white model Asus ROG Ally 2 appears to be running an AMD 4-core 20W TDP Aierth Plus, a successor to the Steam Deck Van Gogh chipset.

The Xbox variant has more high-end specs, featuring a Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset with 8 cores running on a 36W TDP. It also has 64GB of memory, but it’s unclear what the white variant will offer.

With such high-end specs and tariffs, these handhelds could cost a pretty penny. Judging by the recent pricing of the Switch 2, one can only expect Asus ROG Ally 2 to be out of the reach of normal consumers.

On the other hand, Windows Central reports that Project Kennan will not be able to run native Xbox games and is Microsoft’s first step into handheld territory. The gaming giant plans to release a second dedicated handheld alongside next-gen consoles in 2027.
