Previously Used Bots To Promote Star Wars Outlaws!

Story Highlight
  • The latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer is full of comments from bots.
  • These comments come from users who follow the exact same pattern, practically confirming that they are bots.
  • This is the latest in a long list of controversies over Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

With Star Wars Outlaws out of the way, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the next big release from Ubisoft this year. Slated for launch in November, this Japanese open-world adventure promises the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed experience to date.

However, Ubisoft’s ambitions might be thwarted by the many controversies surrounding this Assassin’s Creed entry. Following controversies over Yasuke and historical accuracy, the publisher has caught flak for relying on bots to promote the game.

Why it matters: This is not the first time Ubisoft has relied on bots to promote one of its AAA blockbusters. The gaming giant previously used bots to create buzz for Star Wars Outlaws.

Popular streamer Asmongold recently reacted to comments on the latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer. This footage highlights the RPG’s world, depicting the detailed environments that bring Ubisoft’s rendition of Feudal Japan to life.

However, looking at the comments, it becomes evident that most praise comes from bots. Asmongold points out that each comment comes from accounts with similar names and profile pictures. These accounts were also created within the last year.

The profiles all have first names, second names, and four numbers, while the profile pictures depict different women. This pattern is immediately noticeable across nearly all these comments.

The comments also have around 4.9-5K lies each, highlighting a suspicious pattern. Perhaps the most interesting fact is that none of these bots have nefarious links in their bios.

Typically, bots on YouTube attempt to redirect people to scam links through their bios. This is not the case here, leading to suspicion that these bots were made by Ubisoft to promote positivity for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Yasuke’s Inclusion In The Game Has Become A Point of Contention

Also, all the comments seem unique, leading to further suspicion that they were written for a specific purpose. Since the community has been skeptical about Assassin’s Creed Shadows for a while, this may be Ubisoft’s attempt to turn the tide.

Following this discussion, the latest comments on the video point to the publisher using bot-written comments. While there are still a few positive comments, this trailer has created yet another controversy that Assassin’s Creed Shadows didn’t need.
