Leaving After Ubisoft Partnered With Tencent For New Subsidiary!

Story Highlight
  • Longtime Ubisoft developer and Assassin’s Creed boss Marc-Alexis Cote is set to leave the studio after 20 years.
  • The developer originally worked on Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and moved on to lead various Assassin’s Creed titles.
  • His departure comes after the French gaming giant joined forces with Tencent to establish Vantage Studios.

The Assassin’s Creed series is nearly twenty years old already, spanning a wide range of historical settings since its inception. Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the series’ latest offering, finally took the franchise to Japan, becoming the last major release before the brand was handed over to the Tencent-funded subsidiary Vantage Studios.

Just months after this announcement, another major change to the series has been confirmed. According to the latest reports, the Assassin’s Creed boss is moving away from the series.

Why it matters: This change could signal a major shift for the series as new leadership attempts to execute its vision for Assassin’s Creed.

As reported by internal sources, Marc-Alexis Cote has decided to leave Ubisoft. The developer joined Ubisoft all the way back in 2005, working on major projects like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Assassin’s Creed 3.

In fact, he took over the series in 2022 and laid the roadmap for the Animus Hub-focused, interconnected Assassin’s Creed universe. In the past, he also worked on games like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Odyssey.

The newly formed Vantage Studios has been largely disappointed by Marc-Alexis Cote’s decision. However, the team still wishes the developer all the best for future endeavors.

Perhaps the developer will now focus on smaller games moving forward. Recently, various ex-Ubisoft developers came up with the GOTY contender Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, so many are excited to see what Marc-Alexis Cote will work on next.

Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed is moving forward with plans to remake Black Flag and release various new AAA entries, including Hexe.

What do you make of the series lead’s exit from Ubisoft? Do you think this move will change the series for better or for worse? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
