- AMD is working on a new neural rendering tech that will take DLSS 5’s approach.
- Leaker has speculated what it might look like.
- The tech will debut with RDNA 5 GPUs, due for 2027.
What started as an upscaling technology to boost game performance by reconstructing frames from a lower resolution to a higher one has, DLSS has lost its plot with the latest iteration, straying far from its original intent and focusing more on actively repainting and enhancing lighting.
So far, the public perception of DLSS 5 has been mixed. While it works like magic for older titles, but in newer games it completely alters the original art style by transforming characters’ faces and is being dubbed an “AI Slop” filter.
As a pioneer in this tech, AMD has been catching up to Nvidia with its own upscaling technology called FSR. Team Red is now also working on its own neural rendering similar to DLSS 5’s implementation.
Why it matters: While the idea of AMD taking a DLSS 5-like approach with the next FSR version sounds like mimicry, Team Red may end up delivering a better model that could force Nvidia to improve theirs, since it is lacking and flawed.

According to reliable leaker Kepler_L2, AMD is working on a new tech that is their take on Nvidia’s DLSS 5. While the leaker didn’t go into detail on how the tech would work, he did speculate on how the new FSR version would work.
- Give the model direct access to 3D game data such as geometry/BVH, Ray data, depth buffers, materials, etc. so it doesn’t have to guess and can accurately know how each object in a scene should interact with light.
- Have a model that only lightning enhancements
- Have a separate model that only does shading of complex surfaces
- Get rid of color-grading step entirely
The leaker also said AMD will have its own Neural Lighting, like DLSS 5, and that part sounds good because the biggest problem with DLSS 5 wasn’t the lighting; it alters the face and does far more than repaint lighting and textures.

However, this feature will be exclusive to RDNA 5 GPUs only that is coming out next year and will feature FSR ‘Diamond’ that will also appear on Xbox Project Helix.
With no further details to go for, there’s only hopeful thinking that AMD’s implementation of Neural Lighting is much better than Nvidia’s.
