AMD EXPO ULL Arrives on AM5 Motherboards, But Support Remains Limited

Boost DDR5 Performance via AM5 BIOS Updates!

Story Highlight
  • AMD is introducing an “Ultra Low Latency” (ULL) feature for its EXPO DDR5 memory profiles via new AM5 motherboard BIOS updates.
  • To use this feature, your motherboard needs a specific AGESA update (1.3.0.1 or 1.3.0.1b) and compatible RAM modules.
  • Because support depends on your specific hardware, BIOS version, and RAM kit, you should check your manufacturer’s release notes before using it.

AMD’s new EXPO Ultra Low Latency (ULL) feature is becoming available through the latest BIOS updates for AM5 motherboards, delivering improved memory performance and reduced latency for compatible DDR5 systems.

The new feature is related to AGESA 1.3.0.1 and AGESA 1.3.0.1b, which require DDR5 modules that support EXPO ULL profiles and depend on each motherboard manufacturer updating their individual models. As a result, public support varies widely among ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE, and MSI.

AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency EXPO ULL

GIGABYTE is the manufacturer with the most widespread communication. The company is referring to AM5 motherboards with AGESA BIOS 1.3.0.1 that are ready for AMD EXPO Technology: Featuring Ultra Low Latency, and their support pages already list 800 series models such as the X870E AORUS MASTER, X870E AORUS MASTER X3D, X870E AORUS PRO, X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE, and X870 AORUS STEALTH ICE. Also, GIGABYTE has extended this to 600 series devices, with examples being the X670E AORUS MASTER, X670E AORUS PRO X, and B650 AORUS ELITE AX.

MSI also openly advertises this capability, even though the localized rollout focuses on 800 series motherboards. Their release notes feature the words “Optimized with AMD EXPO Technology: Featuring Ultra Low Latency” in addition to AGESA PI 1.3.0.1 b.

The versions presented are the MEG X870E GODLIKE, MPG X870E EDGE TI WIFI, B850 GAMING PLUS WIFI, B850 GAMING PLUS WIFI PZ, B850 GAMING PRO WIFI6E, and PRO B850-P WIFI. However, the examined public release notes provide no confirmation for their 600 series motherboards.

RAM AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency EXPO ULL

ASRock has it enabled, though not universally. Their lists include particular models that support BIOS 4.40.AS01, AGESA ComboAM5 1.3.0.1 b, and AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency, such as the X870 Challenger WiFi, X870 Challenger WiFi White, X870E Challenger WiFi, X870E Challenger WiFi White, and X870E Taichi White. Other AM5 models from the manufacturer do not currently have this clear mention, so support is confined to certain motherboards.

ASUS is the most cautious case. Their most recent BIOS for X870 and X870E includes AGESA 1.3.0.1 b, which provides memory settings such as tCCD_L, tCCDL_WR, and tCCDL_WR2, as well as remarks such as “New memory profile support.” However, the evaluated models do not expressly mention AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency, and there is no publicly available extension similar to GIGABYTE’s for the 600 series.

In conclusion, AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency (ULL) is coming to the AM5 platform. It will not be universally available. This is because support for it depends on the motherboard manufacturer, the chipset type, the motherboard model, the BIOS version, and the DDR5 memory module type. So, users who want to make use of this new feature should first confirm their motherboard’s BIOS release notes and memory compatibility details before expecting the EXPO ULL support profile on their system.
