Will Other AI Models Replace Claude AI When It Comes To Game Port Creation?

Story Highlight
  • Anthropic has restricted Claude AI from remaking video games and creating game ports.
  • A new rule was added to Claude Code’s prompt on Opus 5.5 that prevents it from infringing existing IP.
  • The change has received really negative reception, as it is also harming developers using Claude for original work.

Game emulation across the PS5 and Switch 2 has seen incredible progress in the last few months, thanks to AI platforms like Claude that greatly increased the efficiency of developers. Gamers have even merged separate games together with ambitious mods.

However, Anthropic is taking strict action against video game remakes. The company is blocking Claude AI on Opus 5.5 from making game ports, preventing it from assisting in reverse-engineering and recompiling existing franchises.

Why it matters: Claude has restricted people from remaking entire games and ports via recompilation, but developers working on legitimate projects are now running into a lot of issues since the new change.

Twitter user Chasm earlier reported that Claude is no longer allowing recreation of existing games. Anthropic technical staff member Addy Osmani confirmed this change, claiming the rule was added to prevent Claude from infringing IP moving forward.

The new rule has faced intense backlash from gamers and developers alike. Players have argued that this change will hold back gaming, as it will also harm the creation of legitimate mods and clean room implementations, and these concerns do have proper weight to them.

Claude AI is also restricting the creation of games and mechanics that don’t copy existing source code. A motley of issues has been reported in Claude’s GitHub since the rule was added, where the AI bot refuses to do standard game work in the middle of development.

For example, one developer can’t replicate a game mechanic in their project anymore, while another faces issues updating code for a tabletop-like game.

Similarly, Claude AI is also not even reverse-engineering projects unrelated to game remakes, refusing tasks like analyzing a simple Windows crash dump.
