- Sony recently paid a $50,000 bounty for a critical PS5 exploit.
- The exploit was reported privately and was found using AI.
- Before the report to Sony, another engineer had already discovered the exploit, but the use of LLM allowed others to land on the same vulnerability.
The PS5 has seen a number of jailbreaking efforts lately. In fact, PS5 games have also been emulated rapidly on PC thanks to modern generative AI’s capabilities. Now, a hacker has even used AI to secure a major reward from Sony by helping the company identify a PS5 exploit.
Why it matters: Console jailbreaking is now easier than ever, so it will be interesting to see how the hacking landscape evolves in the coming years.

According to IGN’s report, Sony paid the reward after a PS5 exploit was reported through the company’s security disclosure process. The $50,000 payout was given to a PS5 modder for finding and reporting a critical exploit that would have allowed the use of Linux on the console.
However, the story becomes more interesting when understanding that the hacker Jordy, who won the $50,000 payout, used AI to find this exploit. Prior to this, another security engineer had already discovered the exploit and was working on making Linux usable on the PS5 from firmware 13.60 to 14.0.
Many had also wanted to dual boot Linux on the console while retaining the ability to play GTA 6 legally next month, something that will no longer be possible after Sony patches this security vulnerability.
According to Jordy, others would have found the vulnerability before him if he had refrained from reporting it to Sony. He believes anybody could’ve done so using AI. Therefore, the hacker decided to take the reward due to mounting pressure from his mother’s terminal illness.

There’s more to the entire story, and you can find additional details via the report mentioned above. Needless to say, generative AI has changed plenty of things in the tech industry, including the prospects of console hacking and jailbreaking.
