- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 recently released with a brilliant 86 score on Metacritic.
- The title has become the highest-rated game in the franchise in the last 15 years.
- The only game that had a higher score was Modern Warfare 3, released in 2011.
Infinity Ward has finally delivered a Call of Duty game that fans had been yearning for years. This seems like a return to form for the series after the last few entries failed to impress. It also earned a very decent 86 on Metacritic.
Interestingly, this score also makes Modern Warfare 4 the highest-rated mainline game in the franchise in the last 15 years. The only game that topped this score was 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, more than a decade ago.
Why it Matters: Last year was completely devastating for the franchise, since Battlefield 6 totally annihilated Black Ops 7, but that was also because it was so underwhelming that even hardcore fans weren’t interested.

On Metacritic, Modern Warfare 4 holds a score of 86, making it the highest-rated title in 15 years. For context, the last few scores included 65 for Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare 3 with 56, and a somewhat decent 82.
Anyhow, it was sad to see how badly Call of Duty had fallen. This year’s release addresses a lot of issues with the campaign and DMZ mode; however, the skill-based matchmaking issues are still persistent in multiplayer.

So, it’s not perfect, but it is promising and suggests that Activision has started listening to the fans, and the franchise might further evolve. Steam indicates that too, since it has “mostly positive” reviews on the platform.
