Gears of War: E-Day Reportedly Cost Xbox A Whopping $500 Million

E-Day May Have Been Xbox's Most Expensive Game To Date!

Story Highlight
  • Gears of War: E-Day reportedly had a budget of around $500 million.
  • The figure comes following reports of Game Pass cannibalizing the title’s sales on Xbox.
  • Estimates suggest that the game has yet to earn back even 10% of its total budget.

Gears of War: E-Day earned solid review scores earlier this month, but the game doesn’t seem to be doing too well in terms of its commercial reception. New reports suggest that the title carried a massive $500 million budget, raising further eyebrows regarding the first-party release.

Why it matters: AAA budgets have long been out of hand, with Gears of War: E-Day being the latest game to demonstrate this problem.

Gears of War: E-Day Was Expected To Mark The Series’ Return To Form

This figure comes courtesy of Kotaku, which suggests the title cost over $500 million to produce. It is also said that this figure did not include marketing costs. Anyway you look at it, Gears of War: E-Day likely ended up being one of Xbox’s most expensive games to date.

Sales estimates from Alinea Analytics also suggest that the title had only made $37 million at launch. Therefore, the third-persons hooter has likely made less than 10% of its production cost back since release.

As for the budget itself, The Coalition spent a lot of time upgrading its tech to produce future games faster. As such, the $500 million could eventually be recouped through future entries.

However, because Xbox has been so aggressive with its layoffs, the team might face problems soon if Gears of War: E-Day doesn’t pick up the pace in terms of sales.
