- Kojima says social media causes misinformation that leads to false claims.
- He said Death Stranding walking simulator criticism is driven by this misinformation.
- People who haven’t even played the game say things like this, spreading wrong claims.
Despite being among the finest games released in recent years, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding games are often cited as ‘walking simulators’. The legendary developer has spoken out on that stance, blaming social media for it.
Kojima recently talked about how misinformation and false narratives are spread through social media. He stated that Death Stranding walking simulator criticism showcases the dangers of false information on social media.
Why it matters: This is indeed true in most cases, since a lot of opinions on social media stem from people who haven’t experienced things themselves and just use word of mouth to spread false information.
In an interview with Gizmodo, Kojima talked about the dangers of social media. He noted that they envisioned AI-led misinformation in Metal Gear Solid 2. Now, years later, that has become a reality with social media platforms.
Citing Death Stranding as an example, he said that many people who call it a walking simulator haven’t even played the game. They just read things on social media, get influenced, and don’t experience it.

Kojima was talking to film director Alejandro Iñárritu, who agreed and continued that these algorithms trap users in echo chambers where they only see opinions they agree with, leading to fragmented truth.
