PS5 Suffers Console Jailbreak On Latest 14.10 Firmware Needed To Run GTA 6

GTA 6 Could Run On A Jailbroken PS5 If Sony Doesn't Step In!

Story Highlight
  • The PS5 has already been partially jailbroken on the latest 14.10 firmware.
  • A homebrew developer gained kernel and debug access to the software, but dumping games remains a goal.
  • The hypervisor bypass hasn’t been penetrated yet, but it appears to only be a matter of time.

The PS5 has experienced rapid breakthroughs in the jailbreaking and emulation scene in the last few months. Many console releases now achieve playable performance on PC, turning the progress into a back-and-forth battle between Sony and the community.

Sony answered with the 14.10 firmware a little over two weeks ago in order to prevent GTA 6 from falling victim to piracy. New developments now reveal that 14.10 software has already been jailbroken, at least partially.

Why it matters: The homebrew developer has decided to keep the partial PS5 jailbreak private for now, likely to prevent Sony from patching the underlying advancement ahead of the GTA 6 launch. A hypervisor bypass exploit would fully compromise the 14.10 firmware.

Homebrew developer Gezine on Twitter has broken through new security measures and gained kernel and debug-level access to the 14.10 firmware, reaching debug settings menus never meant to be seen by the public.

However, dumping games is still not possible at the moment, as Sony has reinforced measures in 14.xx firmware to prevent executables from working. The developer argues that a new exploit to bypass the hypervisor is required.

If Sony doesn’t release a stronger firmware in time, then it would be possible for gamers to play GTA 6 on a jailbroken PS5.

For those not in the know, GTA 6 will only run on 14.10 firmware and beyond, so a complete jailbreak could make it susceptible to piracy now.

PS5 jailbreak
Sony is taking heavy measures against PS5 exploits as the GTA 6 release draws near.

A complete jailbreak could also be a matter of time. Gezine has decided against releasing a public build of the exploit for now, likely to prevent Sony from patching the vulnerability. Many users have praised the developer for this decision.

Sony has yet to respond.

Do you think Sony will step in and launch an updated firmware that cannot be jailbroken ahead of the GTA 6 launch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
