Ubisoft Aims To Sell Physical Copies On A Case-By-Case Basis!

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft says it will continue to sell physical games on a case-by-case basis.
  • The decision depends on the game profiles, target audience, and relevant platforms.
  • Many Ubisoft titles still sell a lot of physical copies worldwide compared to several other publishers.

Sony recently came under fire for announcing that it is ending the disc production of first-party titles starting in 2028, which has generated widespread debate across the entire industry. Many other publishers are also expected to follow suit and end launching disc editions.

However, it seems that Ubisoft is certainly not one of these publishers. The company has now shared its stance, confirming it will continue to roll out physical editions on a per-game basis as long as they are expected to sell well based on several metrics.

Why it matters: Compared to other major AAA publishers, Ubisoft adopts more of a modest stance when it comes to selling disc editions of its games. It is opting for a case-by-case basis instead of outright rejecting the declining medium.

Ubisoft
Many Ubisoft games sell like hotcakes globally via disc editions.

We found this detail buried in Ubisoft’s recent annual investors meeting, where company CFO Frederick Duguet answered a query (around 1:39:30) about Ubisoft’s stance on discs in light of all the controversy Sony is facing.

well we’ve got games that, depending on the profiles, Are more or less well suited for physical distribution. So, we are still producing games for physical distribution when the game’s profile, and its audience, and the relevant platform require it.

-Ubisoft CFO, Frederick Duguet.

Frederick argues Ubisoft already produces games for physical distribution and plans to continue so moving forward. Some games sell much better physically than others depending on game genres, target audiences, and the relevant platforms.

So, we’ll likely see the publisher limit disc releases based on these elements.

Sony PlayStation Physical Games
Sony faced a lot of controversy for its decision to end discs.

Many Ubisoft AAA franchises already sell extremely well as disc editions, like AC Shadows selling nearly 50% of all its copies as discs in several countries. So, it’s understandable why the publisher is not pulling out of disc releases moving forward.

However, gamers are still worried because Ubisoft previously defended Sony’s stance on disc cancellation, saying it won’t disturb gaming.
